Ezekiel 18:20
Ezekiel 18:20 in Multiple Translations
The soul who sins is the one who will die. A son will not bear the iniquity of his father, and a father will not bear the iniquity of his son. The righteousness of the righteous man will fall upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked man will fall upon him.
The soul that sinneth, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son: the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him.
The soul that sinneth, it shall die: the son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son; the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him.
The soul which does sin will be put to death: the son will not be made responsible for the evil-doing of the father, or the father for the evil-doing of the son; the righteousness of the upright will be on himself, and the evil-doing of the evil-doer on himself.
It's the person who sins who will die. A son won't pay for his father's sins, and a father won't pay for his son's sins. The good consequences of living right will come to those who are good; the evil consequences of wickedness will come to those who are evil.
The same soule that sinneth, shall die: the sonne shall not beare the iniquitie of the father, neither shall the father beare the iniquitie of the sonne, but the righteousnes of the righteous shall be vpon him, and the wickednesse of the wicked shall be vpon him selfe.
The soul that doth sin — it doth die. A son doth not bear of the iniquity of the father, And a father doth not bear of the iniquity of the son, The righteousness of the righteous is on him, And the wickedness of the wicked is on him.
The soul who sins, he shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son. The righteousness of the righteous shall be on him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be on him.
The soul that sinneth, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son: the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him.
The soul that sinneth, the same shall die: the son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, and the father shall not bear the iniquity of the son: the justice of the just shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him.
It is those who sin who will diebecause of their sins. People will not be punished for the sins of their parents, or for the sins of their children. Good/Righteous people will be rewarded for their being good/righteous, and evil people will be punished for theirdoing evil.

Context — The Soul Who Sins Will Die
20The soul who sins is the one who will die. A son will not bear the iniquity of his father, and a father will not bear the iniquity of his son. The righteousness of the righteous man will fall upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked man will fall upon him.
21But if the wicked man turns from all the sins he has committed, keeps all My statutes, and does what is just and right, he will surely live; he will not die. 22None of the transgressions he has committed will be held against him. Because of the righteousness he has practiced, he will live.Cross References

Ezekiel 18:20 Summary
[Ezekiel 18:20 teaches us that each person is responsible for their own sin, and that we can't blame our parents or circumstances for our mistakes. This is a hard truth, but it's also a liberating one, because it means that we have the power to choose how we live our lives, and to seek forgiveness and righteousness through faith in Jesus Christ (as seen in John 3:16). By taking personal responsibility for our sin, we can begin to experience the freedom and joy that comes from living a life that honors God. As Romans 3:23 reminds us, 'all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God', but through faith in Christ, we can receive forgiveness and start anew.]
Frequently Asked Questions
What does it mean that 'the soul who sins is the one who will die'?
This phrase, found in Ezekiel 18:20, emphasizes the personal responsibility each individual has for their own sin, as also seen in Deuteronomy 24:16, where it is written that 'fathers shall not be put to death for their sons, nor sons put to death for their fathers; each is to die for his own sin.'
Does this verse mean that our family background or upbringing has no influence on our spiritual condition?
While Ezekiel 18:20 does state that a son will not bear the iniquity of his father, it does not deny the impact that family and environment can have on our lives, as seen in Proverbs 22:6, which advises training a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it.
How does the concept of personal responsibility for sin relate to the idea of salvation by faith?
The Bible teaches that salvation is a gift of God, received through faith in Jesus Christ, as seen in Ephesians 2:8-9, and that our works, including our efforts to live a righteous life, do not earn us salvation, but rather are a response to the salvation we have received, as seen in Ezekiel 18:20, where it is written that 'the righteousness of the righteous man will fall upon him.'
What is the significance of the phrase 'the wickedness of the wicked man will fall upon him'?
This phrase serves as a warning that our sinful actions have consequences, and that we will ultimately be held accountable for the choices we make, as also seen in Galatians 6:7-8, where it is written that 'a man reaps what he sows.'

- What does it mean for 'the righteousness of the righteous man' to 'fall upon him', and how can I cultivate righteousness in my own life?
