40For on My holy mountain, the high mountain of Israel, declares the Lord GOD, there the whole house of Israel, all of them, will serve Me in the land. There I will accept them and will require your offerings and choice gifts, along with all your holy sacrifices. 41When I bring you from the peoples and gather you from the lands to which you have been scattered, I will accept you as a pleasing aroma. And I will show My holiness through you in the sight of the nations.Cross References

Ezekiel 20:39 Summary
[Ezekiel 20:39 is a call to repentance, where God tells the Israelites to go ahead and serve their idols, but ultimately, they will return to Him and listen to His voice. This is similar to what we see in Romans 1:24, where God gives people over to their sinful desires, but ultimately, He wants them to return to Him. In simple terms, God is saying, 'If you want to chase after false gods, go ahead, but you will eventually come back to Me.' As we see in Deuteronomy 12:3-4, God wants us to worship Him alone and not mix our worship with idolatry.]
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does God tell the house of Israel to go and serve their idols in Ezekiel 20:39?
God is essentially saying, 'If you want to serve idols, go ahead, but you will eventually come back to Me and listen to My voice.' This is similar to what we see in Romans 1:24, where God gives people over to their sinful desires, but ultimately, He wants them to return to Him.
What does it mean to defile God's holy name with gifts and idols?
To defile God's holy name means to treat Him as common or profane, rather than sacred and set apart. In Ezekiel 20:39, this refers to the Israelites' practice of offering sacrifices to God while also worshiping idols, which is condemned in Deuteronomy 12:3-4.
Is God giving the Israelites permission to sin in Ezekiel 20:39?
No, God is not giving the Israelites permission to sin. Rather, He is stating a fact: they will continue to serve their idols, but eventually, they will return to Him and listen to His voice. This is a call to repentance, similar to what we see in Matthew 4:17, where Jesus calls people to repent and turn to God.
What is the ultimate goal of God's command in Ezekiel 20:39?
The ultimate goal is for the Israelites to turn away from their idols and worship God alone, as stated in Ezekiel 20:40, where God says that the whole house of Israel will serve Him on His holy mountain.

- What does it mean for me to 'listen to God' and follow His voice, as the Israelites are called to do in Ezekiel 20:39?
- How can I ensure that my worship and sacrifices to God are pure and not tainted by idolatry or sinful desires?
