Context — The Refining Furnace
19Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘Because all of you have become dross, behold, I will gather you into Jerusalem.
20Just as one gathers silver, copper, iron, lead, and tin into the furnace to melt with a fiery blast, so I will gather you in My anger and wrath, leave you there, and melt you. 21Yes, I will gather you together and blow on you with the fire of My wrath, and you will be melted within the city.Cross References

Ezekiel 22:19 Summary
This verse means that God is going to gather His people together in Jerusalem because they have become worthless and useless, like the leftover residue from refining metal. This is a time of judgment and refining, where God will purify His people like silver is refined in a furnace, as seen in Malachi 3:3. It's like when we refine gold or silver, we have to put it through fire to get rid of the impurities, and that's what God is doing with His people (Isaiah 48:10, Zechariah 13:9). We can learn to trust in God's goodness and love, even when He is refining us, because He is a holy and just God who wants the best for us (Romans 8:28, 2 Corinthians 12:7-10).
Frequently Asked Questions
What does it mean to become 'dross' in Ezekiel 22:19?
To become dross means to be worthless or useless, much like the residue left over after metal has been refined, as seen in Ezekiel 22:18 where the house of Israel is compared to copper, tin, iron, and lead inside the furnace, resulting in only dross of silver, similar to the refining process described in Isaiah 1:22 and Malachi 3:3.
Why does God say He will gather the people into Jerusalem in Ezekiel 22:19?
God says He will gather the people into Jerusalem because they have become dross, implying a time of judgment and refining, similar to what is described in Zechariah 13:9 and Isaiah 48:10, where God refines His people like silver is refined in a furnace.
Is this verse talking about a literal gathering or a spiritual one?
This verse is likely talking about a literal gathering, as God is speaking of gathering the people into Jerusalem, but it also has spiritual implications, as seen in Ezekiel 20:34-38, where God gathers His people to judge them and refine them, similar to the spiritual gathering described in Matthew 25:31-46.
What can we learn from this verse about God's character?
This verse teaches us that God is a holy and just God who will not tolerate sin, as seen in Ezekiel 22:19, and that He is also a God of refining and purification, as described in Daniel 12:10 and Job 23:10, where His people are refined like gold in a furnace.
