Context — The Duties of the Priests
22And they shall not marry a widow or a divorced woman, but must marry a virgin of the descendants of the house of Israel, or a widow of a priest.
23They are to teach My people the difference between the holy and the common and show them how to discern between the clean and the unclean. 24In any dispute, they shall officiate as judges and judge according to My ordinances. They must keep My laws and statutes regarding all My appointed feasts, and they must keep My Sabbaths holy.Cross References

Ezekiel 44:22 Summary
This verse explains that priests were only allowed to marry virgins or widows of other priests, emphasizing their role in serving the Lord and the importance of purity. This standard was part of a larger set of rules to help the priests stay focused on their spiritual duties, as seen in Ezekiel 44:20-24. In simple terms, this verse shows us that our choices and actions should reflect our love and commitment to the Lord, just like the priests were called to do (see also Matthew 5:8). By considering our relationships and choices in light of our faith, we can honor the Lord and live a life that is pleasing to Him.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why are priests in Ezekiel 44:22 only allowed to marry virgins or widows of priests?
This restriction emphasizes the importance of purity and separation for the priests, as seen in Leviticus 21:14, where priests are also instructed to marry virgins or widows of priests, highlighting their unique role in serving the Lord.
Does this verse imply that marrying a widow or divorced woman is wrong?
Not necessarily, as seen in Isaiah 54:4-5, where God's love for the widow is highlighted, and in Deuteronomy 24:1-4, where divorce is addressed; this verse specifically addresses the unique standards for priests, not the general population.
How does this verse relate to the broader biblical teaching on marriage and purity?
This verse is part of a larger biblical theme emphasizing the importance of purity and faithfulness in marriage, as seen in Ephesians 5:25-33, where husbands are called to love their wives as Christ loves the church, and in Hebrews 13:4, where marriage is honored by all.
Is this standard for priests still applicable today?
While the specific regulations in Ezekiel 44:22 were given to the Israelites under the Old Covenant, the broader principles of purity, faithfulness, and separation unto the Lord remain relevant for believers today, as seen in 2 Corinthians 6:14-7:1, where believers are called to separate themselves from unbelievers and be holy.
Reflection Questions

- In what ways can I honor the Lord with my own relationships and choices, reflecting the standards of purity and faithfulness seen in this verse?
