Ezekiel 7:6 Summary

[Ezekiel 7:6 is a warning that God's judgment is coming, and it's a wake-up call for us to examine our lives and make sure we're living according to His ways. The 'end' referred to in this verse is not just the end of a period of time, but the end of sin and rebellion, as God brings His people back to Himself. This verse reminds us that our actions have consequences, and that God is a God of justice and mercy, as seen in verses like Psalm 103:8-12 and Matthew 25:31-46. As we reflect on this verse, let's ask ourselves if we're living in a way that honors God, and if not, what changes we need to make to align our lives with His will.]

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the 'end' being referred to in Ezekiel 7:6?

The 'end' in Ezekiel 7:6 refers to the final judgment and destruction that God will bring upon the people of Israel due to their sins, as also warned in Jeremiah 6:13-15 and Isaiah 5:8-30.

Why is the phrase 'The end has come' repeated in this verse?

The repetition of 'The end has come' emphasizes the certainty and inevitability of God's judgment, much like the repetition of 'Holy, holy, holy' in Isaiah 6:3 to emphasize God's holiness.

What does it mean that 'it has roused itself against you'?

This phrase suggests that the judgment of God has been stirred up or provoked by the people's sins, much like the concept of God's wrath being stirred up in Psalm 78:49 and Romans 1:18-23.

Is this verse only applicable to the ancient Israelites, or does it have relevance for us today?

While the immediate context of Ezekiel 7:6 is a warning to the ancient Israelites, the principle of God's judgment on sin is still applicable today, as seen in verses like Romans 6:23 and 2 Thessalonians 1:8-9.

Reflection Questions

  1. What are the 'ways' and 'abominations' that have provoked God's judgment, and how do these relate to my own life?
  2. In what ways can I examine my heart and life to ensure I am not contributing to the kind of sin and rebellion that leads to God's judgment?
  3. How can I balance the message of God's judgment with the message of His love and mercy, as seen in verses like John 3:16 and Romans 8:1?
  4. What does it mean for me to 'know that I am the Lord' as mentioned in Ezekiel 7:4, and how can I deepen my understanding of God's character and ways?

Gill's Exposition on Ezekiel 7:6

An end is come, the end is come,.... These words, so often repeated, show the eagerness and concern of the prophet's mind; the speed and haste destruction was making; and the great stupidity of the

Jamieson-Fausset-Brown on Ezekiel 7:6

An end is come, the end is come: it watcheth for thee; behold, it is come. It watcheth for thee - rather, 'waketh for thee.' It awakes up from its past slumber against thee (Psalms 78:65-66).

Matthew Poole's Commentary on Ezekiel 7:6

Thus frequently is it repeated to show the certainty of the thing, the heaviness of the judgment, the great apprehensions they should have of it, and yet the great security they are under. God’ s vengeance seems to slumber, and sinners dream it will never awake, but here the prophet assureth the sinners of Jerusalem, and its people, that God hath awakened his vengeance, which now watcheth to take the first opportunity, or rather to hasten it.

Trapp's Commentary on Ezekiel 7:6

Ezekiel 7:6 An end is come, the end is come: it watcheth for thee; behold, it is come.Ver. 6. An end is come, the end is come.] Still the prophet ringeth this doleful knell in their ears, whom sin and Satan had cast into such a dead lethargy, that they could not easily be aroused. Battologia est, sed necessaria verborum redundantia, saith Pintus. It watcheth for thee.] Which hitherto lay at the door, sleeping dog sleep, as we say. In the Hebrew there is an elegant alliteration between hakets, "an end," and hekits, "watcheth." See 2 Peter 3:3.

Adam Clarke's Commentary on Ezekiel 7:6

Verse 6. An end is come, the end is come: it watcheth for thee] This is similar to the second verse; but there is a paronomasia, or play upon letters and words, which is worthy of note. קץ בא בא הקץ הקץ אליך kets ba, ba hakkets, hekits elayich. קצה katsah signifies to make an end or extremity, by cutting off something, and יקץ yakats signifies to awake from sleep: hence קיץ kits, the summer, as the earth and its productions seem then to awake from the sleep of winter. The end or final destruction is here personified; and represented as an executioner who has arisen early from his sleep, and is waiting for his orders to execute judgment upon these offenders. Hence it is said-

Cambridge Bible on Ezekiel 7:6

6. it watcheth] Rather: it awaketh for thee. The word forms an alliteration with “end” (Ḳ ?êç, heḳ ?îç), and suggests that the vengeance slumbering long is now ready to fall on them. A similar paronomasia in Amos 8:2, between “end” and “summer fruit,” and in Jeremiah 1:11, between “almond tree” and “be wakeful.”

Barnes' Notes on Ezekiel 7:6

The end is come: it watcheth for thee - The end (personified) so long slumbering now awakes and comes upon thee.

Whedon's Commentary on Ezekiel 7:6

6. Watcheth for thee — Literally, awaketh against thee. There is a play on words here impossible to reproduce.
