Judges 16:17
Judges 16:17 in Multiple Translations
Samson told her all that was in his heart: “My hair has never been cut, because I have been a Nazirite to God from my mother’s womb. If I am shaved, my strength will leave me, and I will become as weak as any other man.”
That he told her all his heart, and said unto her, There hath not come a razor upon mine head; for I have been a Nazarite unto God from my mother’s womb: if I be shaven, then my strength will go from me, and I shall become weak, and be like any other man.
And he told her all his heart, and said unto her, There hath not come a razor upon my head; for I have been a Nazirite unto God from my mother’s womb: if I be shaven, then my strength will go from me, and I shall become weak, and be like any other man.
And opening all his heart to her, he said to her, My head has never been touched by a blade, for I have been separate to God from the day of my birth: if my hair is cut off, then my strength will go from me and I will become feeble, and will be like any other man.
Eventually Samson confided in her, sharing everything. “My hair has never been cut, because I've been dedicated as a Nazirite to God from my birth. If I'm shaved, my strength will leave me, and I'll become as weak as anyone else.”
Therefore he tolde her all his heart, and said vnto her, There neuer came rasor vpon mine head: for I am a Nazarite vnto God from my mothers wombe: therefore if I bee shauen, my strength will goe from me, and I shalbe weake, and be like all other men.
that he declareth to her all his heart, and saith to her, 'A razor hath not gone up on my head, for a Nazarite to God I [am] from the womb of my mother; if I have been shaven, then hath my power turned aside from me, and I have been weak, and have been as any of the human race.'
He told her all his heart and said to her, “No razor has ever come on my head; for I have been a Nazirite to God from my mother’s womb. If I am shaved, then my strength will go from me and I will become weak, and be like any other man.”
That he told her all his heart, and said to her, There hath not come a razor upon my head; for I have been a Nazarite to God from my birth: if I be shaved, then my strength will go from me, and I shall become weak, and be like any other man.
Then opening the truth of the thing, he said to her: The razor hath never come upon my head, for I am a Nazarite, that is to say, consecrated to God from my mother’s womb: if my head be shaven, my strength shall depart from me, and I shall become weak, and shall be like other men.
Finally Samson told her the truth. He said, “I have been set apart for God since the day I was born. And because of that, my hair has never been cut. If my hair were shaved off, my strength would be gone, and I would be as weak as other men.”

Context — Delilah Learns the Secret
17Samson told her all that was in his heart: “My hair has never been cut, because I have been a Nazirite to God from my mother’s womb. If I am shaved, my strength will leave me, and I will become as weak as any other man.”
18When Delilah realized that he had revealed to her all that was in his heart, she sent this message to the lords of the Philistines: “Come up once more, for he has revealed to me all that is in his heart.” Then the lords of the Philistines came to her, bringing the money in their hands. 19And having lulled him to sleep on her lap, she called a man to shave off the seven braids of his head. In this way she began to subdue him, and his strength left him.Cross References

Judges 16:17 Summary
This verse tells us that Samson finally told Delilah the secret of his strength, which was that he had never cut his hair because he was a Nazirite to God from birth. Being a Nazirite meant he was dedicated to God and had to follow certain rules, like not cutting his hair, as a way to show his commitment. If his hair was cut, he believed his strength would leave him, showing how important it is to obey God's commands and stay true to our vows, as seen in Deuteronomy 23:21-23. This teaches us about the importance of keeping our promises to God and being careful who we trust with our deepest secrets, a lesson also found in Proverbs 11:13.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why did Samson finally reveal the secret of his strength to Delilah?
Samson revealed the secret of his strength to Delilah because she pressed him daily with her words and pleaded until he was sick to death, as seen in Judges 16:16, and he eventually gave in to her persistence, showing the vulnerability of even the strongest to persistent temptation, a lesson also seen in 1 Corinthians 10:12.
What does it mean to be a Nazirite to God from one's mother's womb?
To be a Nazirite to God from one's mother's womb, as Samson was, means to be dedicated to God's service from birth, a vow that included not cutting one's hair, as seen in Numbers 6:1-21, and to live a life set apart for God's purposes, similar to the call in Romans 12:1-2 to be living sacrifices.
Why would Samson's strength leave him if his hair was cut?
Samson's strength would leave him if his hair was cut because his hair was a symbol of his Nazirite vow and his separation to God, and cutting it would be a violation of that vow, as indicated in Judges 16:17, highlighting the importance of obedience to God's commands, as also emphasized in Deuteronomy 28:1-2.
What can we learn from Samson's mistake in trusting Delilah?
We can learn from Samson's mistake the importance of discernment and not trusting those who do not have our best interests at heart, as warned in Proverbs 25:19, and the need to rely on God's wisdom and guidance, as encouraged in James 1:5-6.
