Context — A Message for Israel’s Neighbors
14This is what the LORD says: “As for all My evil neighbors who attack the inheritance that I bequeathed to My people Israel, I am about to uproot them from their land, and I will uproot the house of Judah from among them.
15But after I have uprooted them, I will once again have compassion on them and return each one to his inheritance and to his land. 16And if they will diligently learn the ways of My people and swear by My name, saying, ‘As surely as the LORD lives’—just as they once taught My people to swear by Baal—then they will be established among My people.Cross References

Then the jealousy of Ephraim will depart, and the adversaries of Judah will be cut off. Ephraim will no longer envy Judah, nor will Judah harass Ephraim. They will swoop down on the slopes of the Philistines to the west; together they will plunder the sons of the east. They will lay their hands on Edom and Moab, and the Ammonites will be subject to them. The LORD will devote to destruction the gulf of the Sea of Egypt; with a scorching wind He will sweep His hand over the Euphrates. | 9 | Ezekiel 25:1–17 | Then the word of the LORD came to me, saying, “Son of man, set your face against the Ammonites and prophesy against them. They will set up their camps and pitch their tents among you. They will eat your fruit and drink your milk. I will make Rabbah a pasture for camels, and Ammon a resting place for sheep. Then you will know that I am the LORD.’ For this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘Because you clapped your hands and stomped your feet and rejoiced over the land of Israel with a heart full of contempt, therefore I will indeed stretch out My hand against you and give you as plunder to the nations. I will cut you off from the peoples and exterminate you from the countries. I will destroy you, and you will know that I am the LORD.’ This is what the Lord GOD says: ‘Because Moab and Seir said, “Look, the house of Judah is like all the other nations,” therefore I will indeed expose the flank of Moab beginning with its frontier cities—Beth-jeshimoth, Baal-meon, and Kiriathaim—the glory of the land. I will give it along with the Ammonites as a possession to the people of the East, so that the Ammonites will no longer be remembered among the nations. So I will execute judgments on Moab, and they will know that I am the LORD.’ This is what the Lord GOD says: ‘Because Edom acted vengefully against the house of Judah, and in so doing incurred grievous guilt, therefore this is what the Lord GOD says: I will stretch out My hand against Edom and cut off from it both man and beast. I will make it a wasteland, and from Teman to Dedan they will fall by the sword. I will take My vengeance on Edom by the hand of My people Israel, and they will deal with Edom according to My anger and wrath. Then they will know My vengeance, declares the Lord GOD.’ This is what the Lord GOD says: ‘Because the Philistines acted in vengeance, taking vengeance with malice of soul to destroy Judah with ancient hostility, therefore this is what the Lord GOD says: Behold, I will stretch out My hand against the Philistines, and I will cut off the Cherethites and destroy the remnant along the coast. I will execute great vengeance against them with furious reproof. Then they will know that I am the LORD, when I lay My vengeance upon them.’” |
| 10 | Jeremiah 2:3 | Israel was holy to the LORD, the firstfruits of His harvest. All who devoured her found themselves guilty; disaster came upon them,’” declares the LORD. |
Jeremiah 12:14 Summary
This verse, Jeremiah 12:14, is saying that God will take care of the people who are being mean to His people, Israel. He will remove them from their position of power and influence, just like uprooting a tree. This is because God loves and protects His people, as promised in Genesis 12:7. He wants to keep them safe and separate them from those who do not follow Him, as seen in Exodus 33:16, and will ultimately restore them to their rightful place.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does it mean for God to 'uproot' someone from their land?
When God says He will uproot someone from their land, it means He will remove them from their position of power and influence, much like a tree is uprooted from the ground, as seen in Jeremiah 12:14 and also in Jeremiah 1:10 where God gives Jeremiah the authority to uproot and tear down.
Why does God refer to the neighboring nations as 'evil neighbors'?
God refers to the neighboring nations as 'evil neighbors' because they have consistently shown hostility towards His people, Israel, and have refused to acknowledge Him as the one true God, as stated in Jeremiah 12:14 and also warned against in Deuteronomy 13:6-10.
How does this verse relate to God's promise to Israel?
This verse is a reminder that God is fiercely protective of His people and the land He has given them, as promised in Genesis 12:7 and repeated in Jeremiah 12:14, and He will not hesitate to defend them against those who seek to harm them.
What is the significance of God saying 'I will uproot the house of Judah from among them'?
When God says He will uproot the house of Judah from among the evil neighbors, it means He will separate and distinguish His people from those who do not follow Him, much like He did in Exodus 33:16, and will ultimately restore them to their rightful place as seen in Jeremiah 12:15.
Reflection Questions
- What are some ways that I have seen God's protection and care for His people in my own life or in the lives of others?
- How can I, like the Israelites, trust in God's promise to protect and defend me, even when faced with opposition or adversity, as seen in Psalm 23:4?
- What are some 'evil neighbors' in my own life that I need to be aware of and seek God's protection from, such as temptation or negative influences, as warned against in 1 Corinthians 15:33?
- How can I be a good neighbor to those around me, showing them the love and care of God, as demonstrated in Luke 10:25-37?
