Context — Jerusalem Will Fall to Babylon
8Furthermore, you are to tell this people that this is what the LORD says: ‘Behold, I set before you the way of life and the way of death.
9Whoever stays in this city will die by sword and famine and plague, but whoever goes out and surrenders to the Chaldeans who besiege you will live; he will retain his life like a spoil of war. 10For I have set My face against this city to bring disaster and not good, declares the LORD. It will be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon, who will destroy it with fire.’Cross References

Jeremiah 21:8 Summary
In Jeremiah 21:8, God tells us that He sets before us two paths, one leading to life and the other to death. This means we have a choice to make, and the choice we make has consequences. As Deuteronomy 30:19 says, we should choose life, and to do that, we need to seek God's will and guidance, trusting in Him to direct our paths (Proverbs 3:5-6). By choosing the way of life, we can experience God's blessings and live a life that honors Him.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does it mean to have the way of life and the way of death set before us?
According to Jeremiah 21:8, God sets before us two paths, one leading to life and the other to death, giving us a choice, as seen in Deuteronomy 30:19 where it says 'I call heaven and earth as witnesses today against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore choose life, that both you and your descendants may live.'
Is this verse talking about physical life and death or spiritual life and death?
While the context of Jeremiah 21:8 is talking about physical life and death in the face of the Babylonian invasion, the principle of choosing between life and death is also a spiritual one, as seen in Romans 6:23 where it says 'For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.'
How can we know which path is the way of life and which is the way of death?
According to Jeremiah 21:8, God sets before us the way of life and the way of death, and in Deuteronomy 30:19, it says we should choose life, implying that we need to seek God's will and guidance to know which path to choose, as seen in Proverbs 3:5-6 where it says 'Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.'
What is the significance of God setting before us these two paths?
By setting before us the way of life and the way of death, God is emphasizing our responsibility to choose, as seen in Joshua 24:15 where it says 'And if it seems evil to you to serve the LORD, choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.'
