Jeremiah 29:13 Summary

[This verse means that if you look for God with all your heart, you will find Him. It's like when you really want to find something you lost, and you search everywhere for it until you find it. When you search for God with all your heart, He promises that you will find Him, just like it says in Matthew 7:7-8. This is a wonderful promise that gives us hope and encouragement to seek God with all our hearts, and to trust that He will be found by us.]

Frequently Asked Questions

What does it mean to search for God with all my heart?

Searching for God with all your heart means to seek Him sincerely and wholeheartedly, without any pretenses or ulterior motives, as seen in Deuteronomy 4:29 and Matthew 22:37, and when you do, you will find Him.

Is it really possible to find God if I search for Him?

Yes, according to Jeremiah 29:13, you will find God when you search for Him with all your heart, and this is further confirmed in Matthew 7:7-8, where Jesus teaches that those who seek will find.

What is the relationship between seeking God and calling upon Him in prayer?

Seeking God and calling upon Him in prayer are closely related, as seen in Jeremiah 29:12-13, where calling upon God and praying to Him are mentioned just before seeking Him with all your heart, and this is also seen in Psalm 145:18, where the LORD is near to all who call upon Him in truth.

How does this verse relate to the concept of God's sovereignty and our free will?

This verse shows that God's sovereignty and our free will are not mutually exclusive, but rather, God's sovereignty is what enables us to seek Him and find Him, as seen in Philippians 2:12-13, where we are to work out our salvation with fear and trembling, because it is God who works in us to will and to act according to His good purpose.

Ellicott's Commentary on Jeremiah 29:13

(12, 13) Then shall ye call upon me . . .—The words need no comment, but they cannot be passed over without dwelling on the infinite tenderness which they manifest in the prophet’s soul, the reflex of a like tenderness in the mind of God, from whom he gives the message. It is the anticipation of the like message from the lips of Christ, “He that seeketh findeth, and to him that knocketh it shall be opened” (Matthew 7:8). As they stand, the words are an echo of Deu 4:29-30, as Jeremiah 29:14 is of Deu 30:3-5.
