Joshua 19:37 Summary

Joshua 19:37 lists several cities, including Kedesh, Edrei, and En-hazor, which were given to the tribe of Naphtali as part of their inheritance. This verse shows us that God is a God of details and order, and that He is concerned with the specifics of our lives, just as He was with the Israelites. As we read this verse, we can remember that God is our loving Father, who cares about every aspect of our lives, and who has a plan to prosper us, as seen in Jeremiah 29:11. By trusting in God's sovereignty and goodness, we can have confidence and peace, just as the Israelites did when they received their inheritance, as seen in Deuteronomy 1:29-31.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the significance of the cities listed in Joshua 19:37?

The cities listed in Joshua 19:37, such as Kedesh, Edrei, and En-hazor, were part of the inheritance of the tribe of Naphtali, as noted in Joshua 19:39, and were likely important centers of commerce, worship, and governance, similar to the role of cities in Deuteronomy 1:15.

How do these cities relate to the overall conquest of Canaan?

The cities mentioned in Joshua 19:37 were among those conquered by the Israelites under Joshua's leadership, as part of God's promise to give them the land, as seen in Joshua 1:3 and Leviticus 18:24-25.

What can we learn from the specific mention of these cities in Scripture?

The specific mention of these cities, such as Kedesh and Edrei, reminds us that God is concerned with the details of our lives and the world around us, and that He is a God of order and precision, as seen in Psalm 139:17-18 and Matthew 10:30.

How does this verse fit into the broader narrative of the Bible?

Joshua 19:37 is part of the larger story of God's covenant with His people, and the fulfillment of His promises to Abraham, as seen in Genesis 12:7 and Exodus 6:4, and it points forward to the ultimate fulfillment of God's promises in Jesus Christ, as seen in Hebrews 11:13-16.

And Kedesh,.... This is Kedesh in Galilee, in Mount Naphtali, to distinguish it from others of the same name; it was one of the cities of refuge, Joshua 20:7.

Jamieson-Fausset-Brown on Joshua 19:37

Cambridge Bible on Joshua 19:37

37. Kedesh] or Kedesh Naphtali (= “the Holy Place of Naphtali”), see above, ch. Joshua 12:22, originally, as we have seen, was a royal, and probably a sacred city of the Canaanites. It was conquered by Joshua (ch. Joshua 12:22), and made subsequently “a city of refuge.” Here (a) Barak was born; here (b) he was when Deborah summoned him to fight the battle of his country; hither (c) the prophetess came with him; and hence (d) having rallied the warriors of Zebulun and Naphtali he marched with 10000 men to Tabor (Judges 4:1-10). Edrei, and En-hazor] are unknown. This Edrei must not be confounded with the well-known Edrei in Bashan.

Whedon's Commentary on Joshua 19:37

37. Kedesh — See on Joshua 12:22. Edrei, not the city in Bashan of the same name, (Joshua 13:31, note,) but another near Kadesh, whose name still lingers, perhaps, in Khureibeh, a few miles west of Lake Merom.
