Context — Joshua Reviews Israel’s History
13So I gave you a land on which you did not toil and cities that you did not build, and now you live in them and eat from vineyards and olive groves that you did not plant.’
14Now, therefore, fear the LORD and serve Him in sincerity and truth; cast aside the gods your fathers served beyond the Euphrates and in Egypt, and serve the LORD. 15But if it is unpleasing in your sight to serve the LORD, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living. As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD!”Cross References

Joshua 24:13 Summary
This verse reminds us that God provides for our needs, even when we don't deserve it or haven't worked for it. He gives us good things, like a safe place to live and food to eat, just because He loves us (Psalm 23:1-6, Matthew 6:25-34). Just like the Israelites, we can trust in God's care and provision for us, and be thankful for the blessings He gives us. By remembering God's faithfulness, we can have confidence in His love and care for us, just as the Israelites did in the Promised Land (Deuteronomy 8:1-20).
Frequently Asked Questions
What does it mean that God gave the Israelites a land they did not toil for?
This means that God provided for the Israelites' needs without requiring them to work for it, much like He provided manna in the wilderness (Exodus 16:4-36), demonstrating His grace and care for His people.
Why did God give the Israelites cities they did not build?
God gave the Israelites cities they did not build to show His power and provision, just as He had promised to Abraham in Genesis 12:7, and to remind them of their dependence on Him.
What is the significance of eating from vineyards and olive groves they did not plant?
Eating from vineyards and olive groves they did not plant symbolizes the Israelites' inheritance and the fruit of God's promises, much like the Promised Land was a symbol of their spiritual inheritance (Deuteronomy 1:8, Hebrews 4:1-11).
How does this verse relate to the overall message of Joshua 24?
This verse serves as a reminder of God's faithfulness and provision, setting the stage for Joshua's call to the Israelites to choose whom they will serve (Joshua 24:14-15), emphasizing the importance of loyalty and obedience to God (Deuteronomy 6:10-12).
