Context — The People Confess Their Sins
35For even while they were in their kingdom, with the abundant goodness that You had given them, and in the spacious and fertile land that You had set before them, they would not serve You or turn from their wicked ways.
36So here we are today as slaves in the land You gave our fathers to enjoy its fruit and goodness— here we are as slaves! 37Its abundant harvest goes to the kings You have set over us because of our sins. And they rule over our bodies and our livestock as they please. We are in great distress.Cross References

Nehemiah 9:35 Summary
This verse is saying that even when the Israelites were living in their own land and had many good things, they still refused to obey and worship God. They had been given a beautiful and fertile land to live in, as promised in Exodus 3:8, but they didn't appreciate it or respond with gratitude and obedience. This is a reminder to us today that we need to choose to serve and obey God, even when things are going well, and to be thankful for the blessings we have, as encouraged in 1 Thessalonians 5:18. By doing so, we can live a life that honors God and brings us joy and fulfillment.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does it mean that the Israelites 'would not serve' God in Nehemiah 9:35?

How does this verse relate to the concept of God's sovereignty and human free will?
This verse shows that God gives people the freedom to choose whether to serve Him or not, as stated in Joshua 24:15 and Deuteronomy 30:19, and He holds them accountable for those choices.

How does this verse apply to believers today?
It reminds us that God's blessings and warnings are still relevant today, and we must choose to serve and obey Him, as encouraged in Romans 12:1-2 and 2 Corinthians 5:15, in order to live a life that honors Him.
