| 1 | Deuteronomy 10:8 | At that time the LORD set apart the tribe of Levi to carry the ark of the covenant of the LORD, to stand before the LORD to serve Him, and to pronounce blessings in His name, as they do to this day. |
| 2 | Numbers 2:33 | But the Levites were not counted among the other Israelites, as the LORD had commanded Moses. |
| 3 | Numbers 1:49–53 | “Do not number the tribe of Levi in the census with the other Israelites. Instead, you are to appoint the Levites over the tabernacle of the Testimony, all its furnishings, and everything in it. They shall carry the tabernacle and all its articles, care for it, and camp around it. Whenever the tabernacle is to move, the Levites are to take it down, and whenever it is to be pitched, the Levites are to set it up. Any outsider who goes near it must be put to death. The Israelites are to camp by their divisions, each man in his own camp and under his own standard. But the Levites are to camp around the tabernacle of the Testimony and watch over it, so that no wrath will fall on the congregation of Israel. So the Levites are responsible for the tabernacle of the Testimony.” |
| 4 | Deuteronomy 33:8–9 | Concerning Levi he said: “Give Your Thummim to Levi and Your Urim to Your godly one, whom You tested at Massah and contested at the waters of Meribah. He said of his father and mother, ‘I do not consider them.’ He disregarded his brothers and did not know his own sons, for he kept Your word and maintained Your covenant. |
| 5 | Numbers 16:9–11 | Is it not enough for you that the God of Israel has separated you from the congregation of Israel and brought you near to Himself to perform the work at the LORD’s tabernacle, and to stand before the congregation to minister to them? He has brought you near, you and all your fellow Levites, but you are seeking the priesthood as well. Therefore, it is you and all your followers who have conspired against the LORD! As for Aaron, who is he that you should grumble against him?” |
| 6 | Malachi 2:4 | Then you will know that I have sent you this commandment so that My covenant with Levi may continue,” says the LORD of Hosts. |
| 7 | Numbers 2:17 | In the middle of the camps, the Tent of Meeting is to travel with the camp of the Levites. They are to set out in the order they encamped, each in his own place under his standard. |
| 8 | Numbers 8:6–26 | “Take the Levites from among the Israelites and make them ceremonially clean. This is what you must do to cleanse them: Sprinkle them with the water of purification. Have them shave their whole bodies and wash their clothes, and so purify themselves. Then have them take a young bull with its grain offering of fine flour mixed with oil, and you are to take a second young bull for a sin offering. Bring the Levites before the Tent of Meeting and assemble the whole congregation of Israel. You are to present the Levites before the LORD and have the Israelites lay their hands upon them. Aaron is to present the Levites before the LORD as a wave offering from the sons of Israel, so that they may perform the service of the LORD. And the Levites are to lay their hands on the heads of the bulls, and offer to the LORD one as a sin offering and the other as a burnt offering, to make atonement for the Levites. You are to have the Levites stand before Aaron and his sons and then present them before the LORD as a wave offering. In this way you shall separate the Levites from the rest of the Israelites, and the Levites will belong to Me. After you have cleansed them and presented them as a wave offering, they may come to serve at the Tent of Meeting. For the Levites have been wholly given to Me from among the sons of Israel. I have taken them for Myself in place of all who come first from the womb, the firstborn of all the sons of Israel. For every firstborn male in Israel is Mine, both man and beast. I set them apart for Myself on the day I struck down all the firstborn in the land of Egypt. But I have taken the Levites in place of all the firstborn among the sons of Israel. And I have given the Levites as a gift to Aaron and his sons from among the Israelites, to perform the service for the Israelites at the Tent of Meeting and to make atonement on their behalf, so that no plague will come against the Israelites when they approach the sanctuary.” So Moses, Aaron, and the whole congregation of Israel did with the Levites everything that the LORD had commanded Moses they should do. The Levites purified themselves and washed their clothes, and Aaron presented them as a wave offering before the LORD. Aaron also made atonement for them to cleanse them. After that, the Levites came to perform their service at the Tent of Meeting in the presence of Aaron and his sons. Thus they did with the Levites just as the LORD had commanded Moses. And the LORD said to Moses, “This applies to the Levites: Men twenty-five years of age or older shall enter to perform the service in the work at the Tent of Meeting. But at the age of fifty, they must retire from performing the work and no longer serve. After that, they may assist their brothers in fulfilling their duties at the Tent of Meeting, but they themselves are not to do the work. This is how you are to assign responsibilities to the Levites.” |
| 9 | Exodus 32:26–29 | So Moses stood at the entrance to the camp and said, “Whoever is for the LORD, come to me.” And all the Levites gathered around him. He told them, “This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘Each of you men is to fasten his sword to his side, go back and forth through the camp from gate to gate, and slay his brother, his friend, and his neighbor.’” The Levites did as Moses commanded, and that day about three thousand of the people fell dead. Afterward, Moses said, “Today you have been ordained for service to the LORD, since each man went against his son and his brother; so the LORD has bestowed a blessing on you this day.” |
| 10 | Numbers 18:1–7 | So the LORD said to Aaron, “You and your sons and your father’s house must bear the iniquity involving the sanctuary. And you and your sons alone must bear the iniquity involving your priesthood. But bring with you also your brothers from the tribe of Levi, the tribe of your father, that they may join you and assist you and your sons before the Tent of the Testimony. And they shall attend to your duties and to all the duties of the Tent; but they must not come near to the furnishings of the sanctuary or the altar, or both they and you will die. They are to join you and attend to the duties of the Tent of Meeting, doing all the work at the Tent; but no outsider may come near you. And you shall attend to the duties of the sanctuary and of the altar, so that wrath may not fall on the Israelites again. Behold, I Myself have selected your fellow Levites from the Israelites as a gift to you, dedicated to the LORD to perform the service for the Tent of Meeting. But only you and your sons shall attend to your priesthood for everything concerning the altar and what is inside the veil, and you are to perform that service. I am giving you the work of the priesthood as a gift, but any outsider who comes near the sanctuary must be put to death.” |
Numbers 3:6 Summary
This verse is telling us that God chose the tribe of Levi to help Aaron the priest with his work. The Levites were to assist Aaron and the whole community by taking care of the Tent of Meeting and the tabernacle, as described in Numbers 3:7-8. This reminds us that we are all called to serve others and use our gifts and talents to build up the body of Christ, just like the Levites did (1 Corinthians 12:4-11, Romans 12:3-8). By serving others, we are ultimately serving God and fulfilling our purpose in life, as Jesus taught in Matthew 25:31-46.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why were the Levites chosen to assist Aaron the priest?
The Levites were chosen to assist Aaron because they were set apart by God to serve the community in spiritual matters, as seen in Numbers 3:6 and Numbers 8:6-26, and this role is further explained in Exodus 32:26-29 and Deuteronomy 10:8-9.
What does it mean for the Levites to 'assist' Aaron the priest?
Assisting Aaron the priest meant that the Levites would help with various tasks and responsibilities related to the Tent of Meeting and the service of the tabernacle, as described in Numbers 3:7-8 and Numbers 18:1-7, similar to how Jesus Christ gives gifts to believers to serve the body of Christ in Ephesians 4:11-12.
How does this verse relate to the rest of the book of Numbers?
This verse is part of the larger narrative of the book of Numbers, which tells the story of the Israelites' journey through the wilderness and the establishment of the priestly order, as seen in Numbers 1:1-4 and Numbers 36:13, and it sets the stage for the role of the Levites in the community, as further explained in Leviticus 8:1-36 and Deuteronomy 33:8-11.
What can we learn from the Levites' role in serving the community?
The Levites' role teaches us about the importance of serving others and using our gifts and talents to build up the body of Christ, as seen in 1 Corinthians 12:4-11 and Romans 12:3-8, and it reminds us that our service to God is not just about individual accomplishments, but about working together as a community to fulfill God's purposes, as described in Matthew 20:26-28 and Galatians 5:13.
