Context — The Nazirite Vow
9If someone suddenly dies in his presence and defiles his consecrated head of hair, he must shave his head on the day of his cleansing—the seventh day.
10On the eighth day he must bring two turtledoves or two young pigeons to the priest at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting. 11And the priest is to offer one as a sin offering and the other as a burnt offering to make atonement for him, because he has sinned by being in the presence of the dead body. On that day he must consecrate his head again.Cross References

| 5 | Numbers 19:14–19 | This is the law when a person dies in a tent: Everyone who enters the tent and everyone already in the tent will be unclean for seven days, and any open container without a lid fastened on it is unclean. For the purification of the unclean person, take some of the ashes of the burnt sin offering, put them in a jar, and pour fresh water over them. Then a man who is ceremonially clean is to take some hyssop, dip it in the water, and sprinkle the tent, all the furnishings, and the people who were there. He is also to sprinkle the one who touched a bone, a grave, or a person who has died or been slain. The man who is ceremonially clean is to sprinkle the unclean person on the third day and on the seventh day. After he purifies the unclean person on the seventh day, the one being cleansed must wash his clothes and bathe in water, and that evening he will be clean. |

Numbers 6:9 Summary
[This verse is talking about a person who has dedicated themselves to God and has special hair to show it, but if someone dies near them, their hair gets 'defiled' and they have to shave it off as part of a cleansing process (Numbers 6:9). This is similar to how we need to be cleansed from sin, as seen in 1 John 1:9. The person then has to make an offering to God to make things right, which is like how Jesus made an offering for our sins (Romans 3:25). By following these steps, the person can be holy again and continue their walk with God.]
Frequently Asked Questions
Why did the person with consecrated hair have to shave their head if someone died in their presence?
According to Numbers 6:9, the person had to shave their head because the dead body defiled their consecrated hair, and shaving it was part of the cleansing process, as seen on the seventh day (Numbers 6:9).
What was the significance of the seventh day in this context?
The seventh day was the day of cleansing for the person with consecrated hair who had been defiled by a dead body, and it was also the day they had to shave their head (Numbers 6:9), similar to the seventh day of cleansing in other biblical contexts, such as Leviticus 13:6.
How does this verse relate to the concept of holiness in the Bible?
This verse highlights the importance of maintaining holiness, as the person with consecrated hair was considered holy to the Lord throughout their separation (Numbers 6:8), and any defilement had to be addressed through cleansing and sacrifice, as seen in Leviticus 11:44-45.
What was the purpose of the person bringing two turtledoves or young pigeons to the priest on the eighth day?
The person brought these birds as a sin offering and a burnt offering to make atonement for their sin of being in the presence of a dead body, as part of the process of reconsecrating their head (Numbers 6:10-11), similar to the sacrifices described in Leviticus 1:14-17.
Reflection Questions
- What are some ways that I can maintain my own spiritual purity and holiness in a world that often defiles and corrupts?
- How can I apply the principle of separation unto God, as seen in Numbers 6:8, to my own life and walk with the Lord?
- What are some potential 'dead bodies' in my life that could defile my consecrated walk with God, and how can I avoid them or be cleansed from them?
- How does the concept of atonement and sacrifice, as seen in Numbers 6:10-11, relate to my own need for forgiveness and cleansing through Jesus Christ, as described in Romans 3:25?
