| 1 | Isaiah 1:11–31 | “What good to Me is your multitude of sacrifices?” says the LORD. “I am full from the burnt offerings of rams and the fat of well-fed cattle; I take no delight in the blood of bulls and lambs and goats. When you come to appear before Me, who has required this of you— this trampling of My courts? Bring your worthless offerings no more; your incense is detestable to Me— your New Moons, Sabbaths, and convocations. I cannot endure iniquity in a solemn assembly. I hate your New Moons and your appointed feasts. They have become a burden to Me; I am weary of bearing them. When you spread out your hands in prayer, I will hide My eyes from you; even though you multiply your prayers, I will not listen. Your hands are covered with blood. Wash and cleanse yourselves. Remove your evil deeds from My sight. Stop doing evil! Learn to do right; seek justice and correct the oppressor. Defend the fatherless and plead the case of the widow.” “Come now, let us reason together,” says the LORD. “Though your sins are like scarlet, they will be as white as snow; though they are as red as crimson, they will become like wool. If you are willing and obedient, you will eat the best of the land. But if you resist and rebel, you will be devoured by the sword.” For the mouth of the LORD has spoken. See how the faithful city has become a harlot! She once was full of justice; righteousness resided within her, but now only murderers! Your silver has become dross; your fine wine is diluted with water. Your rulers are rebels, friends of thieves. They all love bribes and chasing after rewards. They do not defend the fatherless, and the plea of the widow never comes before them. Therefore the Lord GOD of Hosts, the Mighty One of Israel, declares: “Ah, I will be relieved of My foes and avenge Myself on My enemies. I will turn My hand against you; I will thoroughly purge your dross; I will remove all your impurities. I will restore your judges as at first, and your counselors as at the beginning. After that you will be called the City of Righteousness, the Faithful City.” Zion will be redeemed with justice, her repentant ones with righteousness. But rebels and sinners will together be shattered, and those who forsake the LORD will perish. Surely you will be ashamed of the sacred oaks in which you have delighted; you will be embarrassed by the gardens that you have chosen. For you will become like an oak whose leaves are withered, like a garden without water. The strong man will become tinder and his work will be a spark; both will burn together, with no one to quench the flames. |
| 2 | Hebrews 10:4–10 | because it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins. Therefore, when Christ came into the world, He said: “Sacrifice and offering You did not desire, but a body You prepared for Me. In burnt offerings and sin offerings You took no delight. Then I said, ‘Here I am, it is written about Me in the scroll: I have come to do Your will, O God.’” In the passage above He says, “Sacrifices and offerings, burnt offerings and sin offerings You did not desire, nor did You delight in them” (although they are offered according to the law). Then He adds, “Here I am, I have come to do Your will.” He takes away the first to establish the second. And by that will, we have been sanctified through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. |
| 3 | Hosea 6:6 | For I desire mercy, not sacrifice, and the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings. |
| 4 | Psalms 40:6–8 | Sacrifice and offering You did not desire, but my ears You have opened. Burnt offerings and sin offerings You did not require. Then I said, “Here I am, I have come— it is written about me in the scroll: I delight to do Your will, O my God; Your law is within my heart.” |
| 5 | Psalms 51:16 | For You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it; You take no pleasure in burnt offerings. |
| 6 | Jeremiah 7:21–23 | This is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: Add your burnt offerings to your other sacrifices and eat the meat yourselves! For when I brought your fathers out of the land of Egypt, I did not merely command them about burnt offerings and sacrifices, but this is what I commanded them: Obey Me, and I will be your God, and you will be My people. You must walk in all the ways I have commanded you, so that it may go well with you. |
Psalms 50:8 Summary
In Psalms 50:8, God is saying that He doesn't need our sacrifices to be pleased with us. This means that we can't earn God's love by doing certain things, but instead, He loves us because of who He is (as seen in Romans 5:8). Our goal should be to please God with our hearts, not just our actions, and to remember that He is always with us, as seen in Matthew 28:20. By focusing on our relationship with God, we can worship Him in a way that is meaningful and true, as seen in John 4:24.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the main point God is making in Psalms 50:8?
God is saying that He does not need our sacrifices to be pleased with us, as seen in Psalms 50:8, and this is reinforced by other scriptures such as Romans 11:35, which reminds us that we cannot give God anything that He does not already own.
Does this verse mean we should stop making sacrifices and offerings to God?
No, this verse does not mean that we should stop making sacrifices and offerings to God, but rather that God values our heart and obedience over our rituals, as seen in 1 Samuel 15:22, where Samuel says that obedience is better than sacrifice.
How does this verse relate to the concept of worship?
This verse reminds us that true worship is not just about the rituals and sacrifices we make, but about having a heart that is fully devoted to God, as seen in John 4:24, which says that God is a Spirit and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.
What does it mean that our burnt offerings are 'ever before' God?
This phrase means that God is always aware of and remembers our sacrifices and offerings, and it emphasizes His constant presence and attention to our worship, as seen in Hebrews 13:15-16, which encourages us to offer sacrifices of praise to God through Jesus Christ.
Reflection Questions
- What are some ways that I try to earn God's favor through my actions, and how can I shift my focus to pleasing Him with my heart?
- How can I ensure that my worship is not just about going through the motions, but is instead a genuine expression of my love and devotion to God?
- What are some areas of my life where I am trying to 'buy' God's favor through my sacrifices and offerings, rather than simply trusting in His love and provision?
- How can I cultivate a deeper sense of awareness of God's presence in my life, and remember that He is always with me, just as our burnt offerings are 'ever before' Him?
