Plate F 49. Jesus Heals a Man by a Pool [John 5:1-47; John 7:1]
John 5:1 [Jn] After this there was a feast of the Jews*; and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
[*Note: The Greek, literally translated, says, "THE feast of the Jews" (i.e. the Passover). Hence "the second sabbath after the first," mentioned in the next story (Luk 6:1), would be a week later.]
[Jn] Now there is at Jerusalem by the sheep [market] a pool, which is called in the Hebrew tongue Bethesda, having five porches.
John 5:3 [Jn] In these lay a great multitude of impotent folk, of blind, halt, withered, waiting for the moving of the water.
[Jn] For an angel went down at a certain season into the pool, and troubled the water: whosoever then first after the troubling of the water stepped in was made whole of whatsoever disease he had.
John 5:5 [Jn] And a certain man was there, which had an infirmity thirty and eight years.
[Jn] When Jesus saw him lie, and knew that he had been now a long time [in that case], he saith unto him, Wilt thou be made whole?
[Jn] The impotent man answered him, Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool: but while I am coming, another steppeth down before me.
John 5:8 [Jn] Jesus saith unto him, Rise, take up thy bed, and walk.
John 5:9 [Jn] And immediately the man was made whole, and took up his bed, and walked: and on the same day was the sabbath.
[Jn] The Jews therefore said unto him that was cured, It is the sabbath day: it is not lawful for thee to carry [thy] bed.
John 5:11 [Jn] He answered them, He that made me whole, the same said unto me, Take up thy bed, and walk.
John 5:12 [Jn] Then asked they him, What man is that which said unto thee, Take up thy bed, and walk?
[Jn] And he that was healed wist not who it was: for Jesus had conveyed himself away, a multitude being in [that] place.
[Jn] Afterward Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said unto him, Behold, thou art made whole: sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee.
John 5:15 [Jn] The man departed, and told the Jews that it was Jesus, which had made him whole.
[Jn] And therefore did the Jews persecute Jesus, and sought to slay him, because he had done these things on the sabbath day.
John 5:17 [Jn] But Jesus answered them, My Father worketh hitherto, and I work.
[Jn] Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only had broken the sabbath, but said also that God was his Father, making himself equal with God.
[Jn] Then answered Jesus and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise.
[Jn] For the Father loveth the Son, and sheweth him all things that himself doeth: and he will shew him greater works than these, that ye may marvel.
John 5:21 [Jn] For as the Father raiseth up the dead, and quickeneth [them]; even so the Son quickeneth whom he will.
John 5:22 [Jn] For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son:
[Jn] that all [men] should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father. He that honoureth not the Son honoureth not the Father which hath sent him.
[Jn] Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.
[Jn] Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live.
John 5:26 [Jn] For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself;
John 5:27 [Jn] and hath given him authority to execute judgment also, because he is the Son of man.
John 5:28 [Jn] Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice,
[Jn] and shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.
[Jn] I can of mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgment is just; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me.
John 5:31 [Jn] If I bear witness of myself, my witness is not true.
John 5:32 [Jn] There is another that beareth witness of me; and I know that the witness which he witnesseth of me is true.
John 5:33 [Jn] Ye sent unto John, and he bare witness unto the truth.
John 5:34 [Jn] But I receive not testimony from man: but these things I say, that ye might be saved.
John 5:35 [Jn] He was a burning and a shining light: and ye were willing for a season to rejoice in his light.
[Jn] But I have greater witness than [that] of John: for the works which the Father hath given me to finish, the same works that I do, bear witness of me, that the Father hath sent me.
[Jn] And the Father himself, which hath sent me, hath borne witness of me. Ye have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen his shape.
John 5:38 [Jn] And ye have not his word abiding in you: for whom he hath sent, him ye believe not.
John 5:39 [Jn] Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.
John 5:40 [Jn] And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life.
John 5:41 [Jn] I receive not honour from men.
John 5:42 [Jn] But I know you, that ye have not the love of God in you.
[Jn] I am come in my Father’s name, and ye receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive.
John 5:44 [Jn] How can ye believe, which receive honour one of another, and seek not the honour that [cometh] from God only?
[Jn] Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father: there is [one] that accuseth you, [even] Moses, in whom ye trust.
John 5:46 [Jn] For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me: for he wrote of me.
John 5:47 [Jn] But if ye believe not his writings, how shall ye believe my words?
John 7:1 [Jn] After these things Jesus walked in Galilee: for he would not walk in Jewry, because the Jews sought to kill him.
50. The Disciples Pick Grain on the Sabbath [Mat 12:1-8; Mark 2:23-28; & Luk 6:1-5]
Luk 6:1 [ Mk Lk] And it came to pass
Mat 12:1 [Mt ] at that time, [Mt Mk Lk] on the [ Lk] second [Mt Mk Lk] sabbath [ Lk] after the first, [ Mk Lk] that [Mt ] Jesus [Mt Mk Lk] went through the corn fields; and his disciples [Mt ] were an hungred, and [Mt Mk ] began, [ Mk ] as they went,
[Mt Mk ] to [Mt Mk Lk] pluck the ears of corn,
[Mt Lk] and
[Mt ] to [Mt Lk] eat, [ Lk] rubbing [them] in [their] hands.
[Mt Mk Lk] And [Mt ] when [ Lk] certain of [Mt Mk Lk] the Pharisees [Mt ] saw [it], they [Mt Mk Lk] said unto [ Lk] them, [Mt Mk ] Behold,
[ Mk Lk] why [Mt Mk Lk] dost [ Lk] thou [and] [Mt ] thy disciples [Mt Mk Lk] that which is not lawful [Mt Lk] to do [Mt Mk Lk] on the sabbath day-
[ Mk Lk] s?
[Mt Mk Lk] And [ Lk] Jesus answering [Mt Mk Lk] said unto them, Have ye not [ Mk ] ever [Mt Mk Lk] read [ Lk] so much as this, [Mt Mk Lk] what David did, when he [ Mk ] had need, and [Mt Mk Lk] was an hungred, he, and they that were with him;
Luk 6:4 [Mt Mk Lk] how he entered into the house of God [ Mk ] in the days of Abiathar the high priest, [Mt Mk Lk] and did [ Lk] take and [Mt Mk Lk] eat the shewbread, [ Mk Lk] and gave also to them that were with him;
[Mt Mk Lk] which
[Mt ] was [Mt Mk Lk] not lawful [Mt ] for him [Mt Mk Lk] to eat, [Mt ] neither for them which were with him, [Mt Mk Lk] but for the priests [Mt Lk] alone?
[Mt ] Or have ye not read in the law, how that on the sabbath days the priests in the temple profane the sabbath, and are blameless?
Mat 12:6 [Mt ] But I say unto you, That in this place is [one] greater than the temple.
[Mt ] But if ye had known what [this] meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice, ye would not have condemned the guiltless.
Luk 6:5 [ Mk Lk] And he said unto them,
[Mt ] For [ Mk ] the sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath:
Mark 2:28 [ Mk ] therefore [Mt Mk Lk] the Son of man is Lord even of the sabbath.
51. Jesus Heals a Withered Hand on the Sabbath [Mat 12:9-14; Mark 3:1-6; & Luk 6:6-11]
[Mt Mk Lk] And [ Lk] it came to pass also, [Mt ] when he was departed thence, [ Lk] that [Mt Mk Lk] he entered [ Mk ] again [Mt Mk Lk] into [Mt ] their [Mt Mk Lk] synagogue [ Lk] on another sabbath, and taught:
Mat 12:10 [Mt Mk Lk] and, [Mt ] behold, [Mt Mk Lk] there was a man [ Mk Lk] there [Mt Mk Lk] whose [ Lk] right [Mt Mk Lk] hand was withered.
[ Mk Lk] And [ Lk] the scribes and Pharisees [ Mk Lk] watched him, whether he would heal
[ Mk ] him [ Mk Lk] on the sabbath day.
[Mt ] And they asked him, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath days?
[Mt Mk Lk] that they might [ Lk] find an [Mt Mk Lk] accus- [ Lk] ation against [Mt Mk Lk] him.
Luk 6:8 [ Lk] But he knew their thoughts,
Mark 3:3 [ Mk Lk] and said to the man which had the withered hand, Rise up, [ Lk] and stand forth [ Mk Lk] in the midst.
[ Lk] And he arose and stood forth.
[ Mk ] And
Luk 6:9 [ Lk] then Jesus [ Mk Lk] said unto them, [ Lk] I will ask you one thing;
[ Mk Lk] Is it lawful on the sabbath days to do good, or to do evil? to save life, or to [ Mk ] kill [ ] [and] [ Lk] destroy [it]?
[ Mk ] But they held their peace.
[Mt ] And he said unto them, What man shall there be among you, that shall have one sheep, and if it fall into a pit on the sabbath day, will he not lay hold on it, and lift [it] out?
Mat 12:12 [Mt ] How much then is a man better than a sheep? Wherefore it is lawful to do well on the sabbath days.
[ Mk Lk] And
Mat 12:13 [Mt ] then [ Mk Lk] when he had looked round about on them
[ Lk] all [ Mk ] with anger, being grieved for the hardness of their hearts, [Mt Mk Lk] he saith unto the man, Stretch forth thine hand. And he [ Lk] did so, [ ] [and] [Mt Mk ] stretched [it] forth:
[Mt Mk Lk] and [ Mk Lk] his hand [Mt Mk Lk] was restored whole as the other.
[Mt Mk Lk] And [Mt Mk ] the Pharisees [ Lk] were filled with madness, [ ] [and] [Mt Mk ] went out, [ Lk] and communed one with another what they might do to Jesus.
[Mt Mk ] And [ Mk ] straightway [ ] [they] [Mt Mk ] took counsel [ Mk ] with the Herodians [Mt Mk ] against him, how they might destroy him.
52. Jesus Withdraws to the Sea [Mat 12:15-21 & Mark 3:7-12]
[Mt Mk] But
[Mt ] when
[Mt Mk] Jesus [Mt ] knew [it], he [Mt Mk] withdrew himself [ Mk] with his disciples [Mt ] from thence [ Mk] to the sea:
[Mt Mk] and great multitude-
[Mt ] s [ Mk] from Galilee [Mt Mk] followed him, [ Mk] and from Judaea,
[ Mk] and from Jerusalem, and from Idumaea, and [from] beyond Jordan; and they about Tyre and Sidon, a great multitude, when they had heard what great things he did, came unto him.
[ Mk] And he spake to his disciples, that a small ship should wait on him because of the multitude, lest they should throng him.
Mark 3:10 [ Mk] For he had healed many; insomuch that they pressed upon him for to touch him, as many as had plagues.
Mark 3:11 [ Mk] And unclean spirits, when they saw him, fell down before him, and cried, saying, Thou art the Son of God.
[Mt Mk] And he [Mt ] healed them all;
[Mt ] and [ Mk] straitly [Mt Mk] charged them that they should not make him known:
Mat 12:17 [Mt ] that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying,
[Mt ] Behold my servant, whom I have chosen; my beloved, in whom my soul is well pleased: I will put my spirit upon him, and he shall shew judgment to the Gentiles.
Mat 12:19 [Mt ] He shall not strive, nor cry; neither shall any man hear his voice in the streets.
[Mt ] A bruised reed shall he not break, and smoking flax shall he not quench, till he send forth judgment unto victory.
Mat 12:21 [Mt ] And in his name shall the Gentiles trust.
53. The Twelve Apostles Chosen [Mark 3:13-19a (...also betrayed him:) & Luk 6:12-16]
[Mk Lk] And [ Lk] it came to pass in those days, that [Mk Lk] he went
[Mk ] up [Mk Lk] into a mountain [ Lk] to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God.
[Mk Lk] And [ Lk] when it was day, he [Mk Lk] called [unto him] [Mk ] whom he would
[ ] [of] [ Lk] his disciples:
[Mk ] and they came unto him.
[Mk Lk] And [ Lk] of them
[Mk Lk] he
[ Lk] chose
[ ] [and] [Mk ] ordained [Mk Lk] twelve, [ Lk] whom also he named apostles, [Mk ] that they should be with him, and that he might send them forth to preach,
Mark 3:15 [Mk ] and to have power to heal sicknesses, and to cast out devils:
[Mk Lk] Simon,
[ Lk] (whom [Mk Lk] he also
[Mk ] sur- [Mk Lk] named Peter,)
Mark 3:18 a [Mk Lk] and Andrew [ Lk] his brother;
[Mk ] and
[Mk Lk] James [Mk ] the [son] of Zebedee, [Mk Lk] and John [Mk ] the brother of James; and he surnamed them Boanerges, which is, The sons of thunder:
[Mk ] and [Mk Lk] Philip and Bartholomew,
[Mk ] and
Luk 6:15 [Mk Lk] Matthew and Thomas,
[Mk ] and [Mk Lk] James the [son] of Alphaeus, and Simon [Mk ] the Canaanite [ Lk] called Zelotes,
[Mk Lk] and
[ Lk] Judas [Mk ] Thaddaeus [ Lk] [the brother] of James,
Mark 3:19 a [Mk Lk] and Judas Iscariot, which also betrayed
[Mk ] him.
54. The Sermon on the Plain
[Lk] And he came down with them, and stood in the plain, and the company of his disciples, and a great multitude of people out of all Judaea and Jerusalem, and from the sea coast of Tyre and Sidon, which came to hear him, and to be healed of their diseases;
Luk 6:18 [Lk] and they that were vexed with unclean spirits: and they were healed.
Luk 6:19 [Lk] And the whole multitude sought to touch him: for there went virtue out of him, and healed [them] all.
[Lk] And he lifted up his eyes on his disciples, and said, Blessed [be ye] poor: for your’s is the kingdom of God.
Luk 6:21 [Lk] Blessed [are ye] that hunger now: for ye shall be filled. Blessed [are ye] that weep now: for ye shall laugh.
[Lk] Blessed are ye, when men shall hate you, and when they shall separate you [from their company], and shall reproach [you], and cast out your name as evil, for the Son of man’s sake.
[Lk] Rejoice ye in that day, and leap for joy: for, behold, your reward [is] great in heaven: for in the like manner did their fathers unto the prophets.
Luk 6:24 [Lk] But woe unto you that are rich! for ye have received your consolation.
Luk 6:25 [Lk] Woe unto you that are full! for ye shall hunger. Woe unto you that laugh now! for ye shall mourn and weep.
Luk 6:26 [Lk] Woe unto you, when all men shall speak well of you! for so did their fathers to the false prophets.
Luk 6:27 [Lk] But I say unto you which hear, Love your enemies, do good to them which hate you,
Luk 6:28 [Lk] bless them that curse you, and pray for them which despitefully use you.
[Lk] And unto him that smiteth thee on the [one] cheek offer also the other; and him that taketh away thy cloke forbid not [to take thy] coat also.
Luk 6:30 [Lk] Give to every man that asketh of thee; and of him that taketh away thy goods ask [them] not again.
Luk 6:31 [Lk] And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise.
Luk 6:32 [Lk] For if ye love them which love you, what thank have ye? for sinners also love those that love them.
Luk 6:33 [Lk] And if ye do good to them which do good to you, what thank have ye? for sinners also do even the same.
[Lk] And if ye lend [to them] of whom ye hope to receive, what thank have ye? for sinners also lend to sinners, to receive as much again.
[Lk] But love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful and [to] the evil.
Luk 6:36 [Lk] Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful.
[Lk] Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned: forgive, and ye shall be forgiven:
[Lk] give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.
Luk 6:39 [Lk] And he spake a parable unto them, Can the blind lead the blind? shall they not both fall into the ditch?
Luk 6:40 [Lk] The disciple is not above his master: but every one that is perfect shall be as his master.
[Lk] And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother’s eye, but perceivest not the beam that is in thine own eye?
[Lk] Either how canst thou say to thy brother, Brother, let me pull out the mote that is in thine eye, when thou thyself beholdest not the beam that is in thine own eye? Thou hypocrite, cast out first the beam out of thine own eye, and then shalt thou see clearly to pull out the mote that is in thy brother’s eye.
Luk 6:43 [Lk] For a good tree bringeth not forth corrupt fruit; neither doth a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.
[Lk] For every tree is known by his own fruit. For of thorns men do not gather figs, nor of a bramble bush gather they grapes.
[Lk] A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.
Luk 6:46 [Lk] And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?
Luk 6:47 [Lk] Whosoever cometh to me, and heareth my sayings, and doeth them, I will shew you to whom he is like:
[Lk] he is like a man which built an house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock.
[Lk] But he that heareth, and doeth not, is like a man that without a foundation built an house upon the earth; against which the stream did beat vehemently, and immediately it fell; and the ruin of that house was great.
[At this point Matthew jumps to Plate I. But Luk 7:1 reveals that the events which begin Plate G took place directly after the events which close Plate F. Hence I follow Luke at this point.]
Plate G 55. Jesus Heals a Centurion’s Servant [Mat 8:5-13 & Luk 7:1-10]
Mat 8:5 a
Luk 7:1 [Mt Lk] And when
[Mt ] Jesus
[Mt Lk] had [ Lk] ended all his sayings in the audience of the people, he [Mt Lk] entered into Capernaum.
[ Lk] And
Mat 8:5 c
[Mt Lk] a [ Lk] certain [Mt Lk] centurion- [ Lk] ’s servant, who was dear unto him, was sick, and ready to die.
Luk 7:3 [ Lk] And when he heard of Jesus, he sent unto him the elders of the Jews, [Mt Lk] beseeching him [ Lk] that he would come and heal his servant,
Mat 8:6 [Mt ] and saying, Lord, my servant lieth at home sick of the palsy, grievously tormented.
Luk 7:4 [ Lk] And when they
Mat 8:5 b [Mt Lk] came to [ Lk] Jesus, they besought him instantly, saying, That he was worthy for whom he should do this:
Luk 7:5 [ Lk] for he loveth our nation, and he hath built us a synagogue.
Mat 8:7 [Mt ] And Jesus saith unto [ ] [them], [Mt ] I will come and heal him.
Luk 7:6 [ Lk] Then Jesus went with them.
[Mt Lk] And [ Lk] when he was now not far from the house, [Mt Lk] the centurion [ Lk] sent friends to him, [Mt ] answering and
[Mt Lk] saying [ Lk] unto him,
[Mt Lk] Lord, [ Lk] trouble not thyself: for [Mt Lk] I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof:
Luk 7:7 [ Lk] wherefore neither thought I myself worthy to come unto thee:
[Mt Lk] but say the word
[Mt ] only, [Mt Lk] and my servant shall be healed.
Luk 7:8 [Mt Lk] For I also am a man
[ Lk] set
[Mt Lk] under authority, having soldiers under me; and I say to this [man], Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth [it].
Luk 7:9 [Mt Lk] When Jesus heard [ Lk] these things, [Mt Lk] he marvelled [ Lk] at him, and turned him about, [Mt Lk] and said unto [ Lk] the people [Mt Lk] that followed
[ Lk] him, [Mt ] Verily, [Mt Lk] I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel.
[Mt ] And I say unto you, That many shall come from the east and west, and shall sit down with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, in the kingdom of heaven.
[Mt ] But the children of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
Mat 8:13 [Mt ] And Jesus said unto the centurion- [ ] [‘s friends], [Mt ] Go, and [ ] [tell him], [Mt ] As thou hast believed, [so] be it done unto thee.
[Mt Lk] And [ Lk] they that were sent, returning to the house [Mt ] in the selfsame hour,
[ Lk] found
[Mt ] his [Mt Lk] servant [ Lk] that had been sick [Mt ] was made
[Mt Lk] whole.
56. Jesus Raises a Widow’s Son
[Lk] And it came to pass the day after, that he went into a city called Nain; and many of his disciples went with him, and much people.
[Lk] Now when he came nigh to the gate of the city, behold, there was a dead man carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow: and much people of the city was with her.
Luk 7:13 [Lk] And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her, and said unto her, Weep not.
[Lk] And he came and touched the bier: and they that bare [him] stood still. And he said, Young man, I say unto thee, Arise.
Luk 7:15 [Lk] And he that was dead sat up, and began to speak. And he delivered him to his mother.
[Lk] And there came a fear on all: and they glorified God, saying, That a great prophet is risen up among us; and, That God hath visited his people.
Luk 7:17 [Lk] And this rumour of him went forth throughout all Judaea, and throughout all the region round about.
[At this point Matthew jumps to Plate B. But Luk 7:18 reveals that the events which begin Plate H took place as a direct result of the events which close Plate G. Hence I follow Luke at this point.]
Plate H 57. John the Baptist’s Inquiry [Mat 11:2-19 & Luk 7:18-35]
Luk 7:18 [ Lk] And the disciples of John shewed him of all these things.
[Mt Lk] And
[Mt ] when
[Mt Lk] John [Mt ] had heard in the prison the works of Christ, he [ Lk] called [unto him] [Mt Lk] two of his disciples,
[ ] [and]
[Mt Lk] sent [ Lk] [them] to Jesus,
[Mt Lk] saying [Mt ] unto him, [Mt Lk] Art thou he that should come? or look we for another?
[ Lk] When the men were come unto him, they said, John Baptist hath sent us unto thee, saying, Art thou he that should come? or look we for another?
[ Lk] And in that same hour he cured many of [their] infirmities and plagues, and of evil spirits; and unto many [that were] blind he gave sight.
Luk 7:22 [Mt Lk] Then Jesus answered and said unto them, Go and tell John those things which ye
[ Lk] have
[Mt Lk] see-
[ Lk] n [Mt Lk] and hear- [ Lk] d; how that
Mat 11:5 [Mt Lk] the blind receive their sight,
[Mt ] and [Mt Lk] the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed,
[Mt ] and [Mt Lk] the deaf hear, the dead are raised up,
[Mt ] and [Mt Lk] the poor have the gospel preached to them.
Luk 7:23 [Mt Lk] And blessed is [he], whosoever shall not be offended in me.
Luk 7:24 [Mt Lk] And when [ Lk] the messengers of John were [Mt Lk] departed,
[Mt ] Jesus
[Mt Lk] began to say unto the multitudes concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness for to see? A reed shaken with the wind?
Luk 7:25 [Mt Lk] But what went ye out for to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? Behold, they that wear
[Mt ] soft
[ ] [and] [ Lk] gorgeous apparel, and live delicately, [Mt Lk] are in kings’ houses.
Luk 7:26 [Mt Lk] But what went ye out for to see? A prophet? Yea, I say unto you, and much more than a prophet.
[Mt ] For
[Mt Lk] this is [he], of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee.
[ Lk] For
[Mt ] verily [Mt Lk] I say unto you, Among them that are born of women there
[Mt ] hath
[Mt Lk] not
[Mt ] risen [Mt Lk] a greater [ Lk] prophet [Mt Lk] than John the Baptist: but he that is least in the kingdom of
[ Lk] God
[ ] [and]
[Mt ] heaven [Mt Lk] is greater than he.
[Mt ] And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force.
Mat 11:13 [Mt ] For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John.
Mat 11:14 [Mt ] And if ye will receive [it], this is Elias, which was for to come.
Mat 11:15 [Mt ] He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.
[ Lk] And all the people that heard [him], and the publicans, justified God, being baptized with the baptism of John.
Luk 7:30 [ Lk] But the Pharisees and lawyers rejected the counsel of God against themselves, being not baptized of him.
Luk 7:31 [ Lk] And the Lord said,
[Mt ] But [Mt Lk] whereunto
[ Lk] then [Mt Lk] shall I liken [ Lk] the men of [Mt Lk] this generation?
[ Lk] and to what are they like?
Luk 7:32 [ Lk] They are [Mt Lk] like unto children sitting in the marketplace-
[Mt ] s, [Mt Lk] and calling [ Lk] one to another [Mt ] unto their fellows,
[Mt Lk] and saying, We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned unto you, and ye have not lamented.
Luk 7:33 [Mt Lk] For John [ Lk] the Baptist [Mt Lk] came neither eating
[ Lk] bread [Mt Lk] nor drinking
[ Lk] wine;
[Mt Lk] and
[ Lk] ye [Mt Lk] say, He hath a devil.
Luk 7:34 [Mt Lk] The Son of man came eating and drinking; and
[ Lk] ye [Mt Lk] say, Behold a gluttonous man, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners!
Luk 7:35 [Mt Lk] But wisdom is justified of
[ Lk] all [Mt Lk] her children.
58. Woe to the Impenitent Cities
Mat 11:20 [Mt] Then began he to upbraid the cities wherein most of his mighty works were done, because they repented not:
[Mt] Woe unto thee, Chorazin! woe unto thee, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works, which were done in you, had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.
Mat 11:22 [Mt] But I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the day of judgment, than for you.
[Mt] And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted unto heaven, shalt be brought down to hell: for if the mighty works, which have been done in thee, had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day.
Mat 11:24 [Mt] But I say unto you, That it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment, than for thee.
59. Come unto Me
[Mt] At that time Jesus answered and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes.
Mat 11:26 [Mt] Even so, Father: for so it seemed good in thy sight.
[Mt] All things are delivered unto me of my Father: and no man knoweth the Son, but the Father; neither knoweth any man the Father, save the Son, and [he] to whomsoever the Son will reveal [him].
Mat 11:28 [Mt] Come unto me, all [ye] that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
Mat 11:29 [Mt] Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.
Mat 11:30 [Mt] For my yoke [is] easy, and my burden is light.
60. A Sinful Woman Anoints Jesus’ Feet
[Lk] And one of the Pharisees desired him that he would eat with him. And he went into the Pharisee’s house, and sat down to meat.
[Lk] And, behold, a woman in the city, which was a sinner, when she knew that [Jesus] sat at meat in the Pharisee’s house, brought an alabaster box of ointment,
[Lk] and stood at his feet behind [him] weeping, and began to wash his feet with tears, and did wipe [them] with the hairs of her head, and kissed his feet, and anointed [them] with the ointment.
[Lk] Now when the Pharisee which had bidden him saw [it], he spake within himself, saying, This man, if he were a prophet, would have known who and what manner of woman [this is] that toucheth him: for she is a sinner.
Luk 7:40 [Lk] And Jesus answering said unto him, Simon, I have somewhat to say unto thee. And he saith, Master, say on.
Luk 7:41 [Lk] There was a certain creditor which had two debtors: the one owed five hundred pence, and the other fifty.
[Lk] And when they had nothing to pay, he frankly forgave them both. Tell me therefore, which of them will love him most?
[Lk] Simon answered and said, I suppose that [he], to whom he forgave most. And he said unto him, Thou hast rightly judged.
[Lk] And he turned to the woman, and said unto Simon, Seest thou this woman? I entered into thine house, thou gavest me no water for my feet: but she hath washed my feet with tears, and wiped [them] with the hairs of her head.
Luk 7:45 [Lk] Thou gavest me no kiss: but this woman since the time I came in hath not ceased to kiss my feet.
Luk 7:46 [Lk] My head with oil thou didst not anoint: but this woman hath anointed my feet with ointment.
[Lk] Wherefore I say unto thee, Her sins, which are many, are forgiven; for she loved much: but to whom little is forgiven, [the same] loveth little.
Luk 7:48 [Lk] And he said unto her, Thy sins are forgiven.
Luk 7:49 [Lk] And they that sat at meat with him began to say within themselves, Who is this that forgiveth sins also?
Luk 7:50 [Lk] And he said to the woman, Thy faith hath saved thee; go in peace.
