AT the feet of Gamaliel] Meaning that he was a continuall and diligent hearer of that grave Doctor Gamaliel: he alludeth to the posture of teachers standing in high places, and auditors sitting below them. See Deuteronomy 33:3. Luke 10:39.
Acts 22:5
unto the brethren] Of the Synagogue of the Jews at Damascus.
for to be punished] To be beaten or imprisoned. See notes on Ch. 9. 2.
Acts 22:12
according to the law] This he speaketh to distinguish between a beleeving Jew and a Proselyte or pious Gentile.
Acts 22:14
and see that Just one] So 1 Corinthians 9:1. & 1 Corinthians 15:8. He saw Christ, either in some supernaturall gifts, a rapt into heaven, or some apprehensible representation, as Chap. 7. 55.

what thou bast seen] That is, not onely this precedent apparition, but principally in that vision described, 2 Corinthians 12:2.
Acts 22:16
wash away thy sinnes] Acts 2:38. By the Spirit of God giving the inward effect of baptisme by the estectuall application of the bloud and merits of Christ: by purification of soul by faith, regeneration, and newnesse of life.
Acts 22:18
And saw him] Saw in that trance the appearance of the Lord so speaking to me.
Acts 22:20
And when the bloud of thy martyr Stephen] Martyr is a Greek word signifying a witnesse: and is in a peculiar manner used to signifie him who in his constant profession in grievous punishment, or violent death, giveth testimonie to the truth of the Gospel.
Acts 22:23
cast off their clothes] To prepare themselves to do violence.
threw dust into the aire] This is a description of a seditious and enraged multitude.
Acts 22:24
by scourging] To compell him to confesse something.
Acts 22:25
a Romane] That is, which is a freeman of Rome, as he was being a citizen of Tarsus: see Chap. 16. 37.
Acts 22:29
examined him] Or, tortured him.
was afraid] In respect of the severe punishment appointed to any, that should abuse a freeman of Rome.
