THe Lord spake] That is, further declared the command which he had given, Chap. 3. 12.
Joshua 4:3
lodging place] that is, Gilgal, where they encamped that night, as appeareth, 5: 19, 20.
Joshua 4:6
signe] To recall unto your remembrance in time to come so great a benefit, for the stirring up of your selves and your posterity to thankfulnesse, for the strengthening of your faith and affiance in God, and working in your hearts true obedience. So Exodus 13:14. Deuteronomy 6:20. Joshua 22:27. and Joshua 24:27.
Joshua 4:9
twelve stones] Besides the twelve stones which were set up in Gilgal, that it might be a monument to them that inhabited about Jordan, or passed that way, of that great miracle.
to this day] That is, by an immutable and perpetuall statute: or it may be meant of that day when this history was written.
Joshua 4:10
Moses] See Num. 27. 21, 22, 23. where the sum of that commanded is expressed.
Joshua 4:12
before the children] That is, before all the other tribes of Israel, according to covenant with Moses, Num. 32. 20, 27. and Joshua’s command, Joshua 1:14.
Joshua 4:13
before the Lord] Before the ark of the LORD, which was a visible signe of Gods presence, and now stood in the middest of Jordan, untill all the people were passed over in their ranks.

Joshua 4:17
out of Jordan] To wit, that they might land on the further bank of Jordan, towards Jericho.
Joshua 4:19
first moneth] called Abib or Nisan; containing part of March, and part of April.
Gilgal] So called here, by anticipation; as though he should say, They encamped in that place which was afterwards by Joshua called Gilgal, Chap. 5. 9.
Joshua 4:23
before you] who survive your rebellious fathers by Gods appointment, Numbers 14. 31.
before us] That is, my self and Caleb, with the rest of our fathers, who for their sin and unbelief fell in the wildernesse.
Joshua 4:24
fear] And thereby be restrained, that you do not start back from obedience unto God, as did your fathers, Jeremiah 32:40.
for ever] That is, all the dayes of your lives.
