Luke 13:1

VVHose bloud Pilate] We find not in any other Scriptures, mention of this fact: it seemeth he caused them to be slain, as they were sacrificing, so that their blood was mingled with the blood of the beasts which they offered: not that they were slain in Galile, whereof Pilate was not Governour; but it may be these were of the Sect of Judas the Galilean, mentioned Acts 5:37.

Luke 13:3

I tell you, Nay] Because men are apt to condemne those whom God afflicteth with temporall punishments, without regarding their own faults, he admonisheth every one to look home to his own deserts.

Luke 13:4

in Sioam fell] Neither do we read this history any where else in Scripture: it seemeth to have been one of the Towers, on the wall of Jerusalem, which stood by the water of Siloe.

sinners] Or, debters.

Luke 13:6

this parable] See Matthew 21:19.

Luke 13:7

these three yeers] That is, these many yeers: it signifieth the patience and longsuffering of God toward sinners.

why cumbreth it the ground] The Greek word signifieth also, to consume, or work out the heart of the ground. The meaning is, that they who are not fruitfull in good works, do evill to others by their example.

Luke 13:10

on the sabbath] Signifying that this miracle was done publikely, when the multitude were assembled.

Luke 13:11

a spirit of infirmitie] It was not any naturall infirmitie, but by the malicious working of the devill.

Luke 13:12

thou art loosed] It hath reference to that which is said, vers. 16.

Luke 13:18

Then said he] See Mar. 4. 30.

Luke 13:19

a grain of mustard-seed] Matthew 13:13. Mar. 4. 31.

Luke 13:20

Whereunto shall I] See Matthew 31:33.

Luke 13:21

measures of meal] See Matthew 13:33.

Luke 13:22

And he went] See Matthew 9:35. Mar. 6. 6.

Luke 13:24

Strive to enter in] See Matthew 7:13. Christ, according to his usuall manner, answered not directly to their question, to satisfie their curiositie, but to that which more concerned them to know, and do.

I say unto you] By a blind desire of salvation, but not well using the right means, shall not attain it. See John 7:34. & John 8:21. and 13. 33. Romans 9:31-32.

Luke 13:25

and hath shut to] He meaneth that God affordeth us time and opportunitie of salvation, which if we omit, we shall be shut out, Psalms 32:6. Isaiah 55:6. Matthew 25:10.

I know not whence you are] That is, I own you not for mine.

Luke 13:26

We have eaten] He meaneth the Jews who had opportunitie of salvation offered them, by Christs presence, and familiar conversing with them, and yet they neglected it.

Luke 13:27

But he shall say] See Matthew 7:23.

depart from me] See Matthew 25:41.

Luke 13:28

weeping and gnashing of teeth] See Matthew 8. 12. and 13. 42. and 24. 51.

Abraham and Isaac] See Matthew 8:11

Luke 13:29

come from the east] Meaning of the Gentiles from all parts of the world, some shall be saved.

shall sit down] See Luke 14:15.

Luke 13:30

And behold] See Matthew 19:30. and Matthew 20:16. Mar. 10. 31.

Luke 13:31

for Hero will kill thee] This seemeth not advise proceeding of good will to Christ, but to rid him away that he might not teach there. See Amos 7 12.

Luke 13:32

and tell that fox] He calleth him so for his subtiltie and fraudulent disposition. See 2 Tim 4. 17.

I cast out devils] Intimating that he had no cause to fear Herods power, who could command the powers of Hell.

to day and to morrow] That is, for a short time which God hath appointed, which was not in the power of man to prevent or abridge.

be perfected] Meaning that he should perfect or finish his course and mans redemption. See John 19:28. 30.

Luke 13:33

perish out of Jerusalem] He sheweth that he must suffer at Jerusalem, where so many of the Prophets had been murdered, that few, or none in respect of them, perished elsewhere.

Luke 13:34

O Jerusalem] See Matthew 23:37.

Luke 13:35

house is left unto you desolate] The Temple, in which you so much glory, shall be destroyed.

Blessed is he that cometh] See Psalms 118:26. Luke 19:38.
