Chap. II. Ver. 1—37. Moses continues his narrative, and reminds the Israelites that they were forbidden to meddle with the Edomites, the Moabites, or the Ammonites.—The same forbearance would, doubtless, have been exercised toward the Amorites, had not Sihon, king of Heshbon, rashly come out to attack them, in consequence of which he was defeated and slain. ((Numbers 21:21-26).) When it is here said, that the Lord hardened his heart, we may turn back to what is said of Pharaoh. (Exod. (Deuteronomy 9)and Exposition.) Bishop Patrick

Notes on the verses

Chap. II. Ver. 9. 47.—Ar was situated south of the Arnon; and was called by the Greek writers Areopolis, and thought by them to be so named because they worshipped Ares, or Mars. Jerome says that it was destroyed by an earthquake when he was an infant. Burckhardt supposes that the ruins of a small castle called Mehatet el Hadj, may be the site of this ancient city,—Bagster.
