Numbers 26:55
- — the land shall be divided by lot:] This dividing by lot was very consistent with the equality required, ver. 54. It is most probable, that the several coasts or provinces of the whole land were by lot adjudged to the several tribes; but then each tribe was assigned a greater or less portion of that tract wherein his lot fell, as the number of its families was greater or less. The exact measure of their portion was not determined by lot; for then Simeon could not have been justly placed within the tract, where Judah inherited, Josh. xix. 1—9. Bp. Kidder. among the children of Israel, because there was no inheritance given them among the children of Israel.
