1 Chronicles 14:1-7

In this chapter we leave, 1. David’s kingdom established, ver. 1, 2. 2. His family built up, ver. 3—7. 3. His enemies the Philliftines reared in two campaigns, ver. 8—17. a a Sam. v. 11. b Phil. lees. d. c Deut. viii. 17. Blade. 2 Sam. v. 6. 1. NOW ‘Hiram king of Tyre sent messengers to David, and timber of cedars, with masons, and carpenters, to build him an house. 2. And David perceived that ’the LORD had confirmed him king over Israel, for his kingdom was left up on high, because of his people Israel. 3. ¶ And David took more wives at Jerusalem: and David begat more sons and daughters. 4. Now these are the names of his children which he had in Jerusalem; Shammuu, and Shohah, Nathan, and Solomon, 5. And Ibar, and Elifua, and Elpalei, 6. And Nogah, and Nepheg, and Japhia, 7. And Elithama, and Bechada, and Elphalei. This account of Hiram’s kindness and David’s family, we had 2 Sam. v. 11. (1.) Like Hiram, we should not enjoy, but rejoice in our neighbour’s prosperity, and with up increase it. (2.) Like David, we should consider every temporal blessing we possess, as lent us of the Lord, to be improved for his glory, and the good of mankind. 8. ¶ And when the Philistines heard that David was amended king over all Israel, all the Philistines went to Seek David: and David heard of it, and went out against them. 9. And the Philistines came and spread themselves in the valley of Rephaim. 10. And David inquired of God, saying, ‘Shall I go against the Philistines, and with thou deliver them into mine hand? And the LORD said unto him, Go up, for I will deliver them into thine hand. 11. So they came up to Baal-perazim, and David fmote them there. Then David said, ‘God shall be broken in upon mine enemies by mine hand, like the breaking forth of waters: therefore they called the name of that place Baal-perazim. 12. And when they had left their gods there, David gave a commandment, and they were burnt with fire. 13. And the Philistines

yet again spread themselves abroad in the valley.’ 14. Therefore David enquired again of God; and God

said unto him, Go not up after them, turn away from them, and come upon them over-against the mulberrytrees. 15. And it shall be, when thou shalt hear ‘I found of going in the tops of the mulberry-trees, that then thou shalt go out to battle: for God is gone forth before thee, to fmote the hoft of the Philistines. 16. David therefore did as God commanded him: and they fmote the hoft of the Philistines from Gibeon even to Gazer. 17. And the fame of David went out into all lands, and the LORD brought the fear of him upon all nations.

1 Chronicles 14:8-17

The Philistines invasions, and David’s victories, we heard before. They give us, 1. A comfortable emblem of the conquests which Jesus hath made for us of all our enmies. (2.) They admonish us of the restless enmity of the feed of the Serpent against the children of God. (3.) They teach us, with David, to cry to God for direction in all our difficulties, and to ascribe to him the praise of all our mercies. (4.) David’s son and David’s Lord hath gotten him a greater name, by his victories over sin, and death, and hell: in him his people rejoice, before him his enemies tremble.
