1 Chronicles 8:1-32

From Benjamin arose the first king; and they claiming to Judah, returned with them after the captivity; therefore a more particular account is given. 1. Of the heads of that tribe, ver. 1—32. 2. Of the family of Saul, ver. 33—40.

1. NOW Benjamin begat Bela his first-born, Afthel the second, and Aharah the third. 2. Noah the fourth, and Rapha the fifth. 3. And the sons of Bela were Addar, and Gera, and Abshud. 4. And Abihua, and Naaman, and Ahoah. 5. And Gera, and Shephuphan, and Huram. 6. And these are the sons of Ehud: these are the heads of the fathers of the inhabitants of Geba, and they removed them to Manahath: 7. And Naaman, and Ahiah, and Gera, he removed them, and begat Uzza, and Ahihud. 8. And Shahraim begat children in the country of Moab, after he had sent them away; Hulhim and Baara were his wives. 9. And he begat of Modrith his wife, Jebah, and Zihia, and Mefha, and Malcham. 10. And Jeuz, and Shachia, and Mirma. These were his sons, heads of the fathers. 11. And of Hulhim he begat Abinah, and Elpah. 12. The sons of Elpah; Eber, and Mitham, and Shamed, who built Ono, and Lod with the towns thereof: 13. Beriah also, and Shema, who were heads of the fathers of the inhabitants of Aiykon, who drove away the inhabitants of Gath: 14. And Ahio, Shafhak, and Jere-

And Adaiah, and Beraiah, and Shimarah, the sons of Shimbi; 22. And Ifipan, and Heber, and Eliel, 23. And Abdon, and Zichri, and Hanan, 24. And Hanaiah, and Elam, and Antoothijah, 25. And Iphodrah, and Penuel, the sons of Shafhak; 26. And Shamtherai, and Shehariah, and Athaliah, 27. And Jarefiah, and Eliah, and Zichri, the sons of Jerusham. 28. These were heads of the fathers, by their generations, chief men: 29. These dwelt in Jerusalem. 30. And ‘at Gibeon dwelt the father of Gibeon, (whose wife’s name was Maachah), 31. And his firth-born son Abdon, and Zur, and Kifh, and Baal, and Nadab, 32. And Gedor, and Ahio, and 33. And Mikioth begat ‘Shimeah. And these also dwelt with their brethren in Jerusalem over again’t them.

The names of some of Benjamin’s defendants vary somewhat from those in Gen. alvi, but what seems variety and intricacy to us, was, (at the time when this was written, no doubt, well understood. In v. 8. after four them away, it may be read, even Hufson and Baara his wives, as divorced. The Ehad mentioned, v. 6. seems not to be the judge of that name. Those who dwelt at Jerusalem, v. 28—32. are twice mentioned, as an inducement to their potency to settle there after their return from Babylon. When we depart from the prison of the body, happy will it be for those who have a part in the new Jerusalem.

33. ¶ And ‘Ner begat Kifh, and Kifh begat Saul, and Saul begat Jonathan, and Maelhihua, and ‘Abiadah, and ‘Eftbaai. 34. And the son of Jonathan was ‘Merib-bai; and Merib-bai begat ‘Micah. 35. And the sons of Micah were, Pithon, and Melech, and ‘Tarea, and Ahaz. 36. And Ahaz begat ‘Jehoadah, and Jehoadah begat Alemeh, and Azmaveth, and Zimri; and Zimri begat Moza. 37. And Moza begat Binea: ‘Rapha was his son, Elealah his son, Azel his son: 38. And Azel had six sons, whose names are these, Azrikam, Bocheru, and Hsmael, and Sheariah, and Obadiah, and Hanan. All these were the sons of Azel. 39. And the sons of Ethek his brother were Ulam his firth-born, Jehuft the second, and Eliphelet the third. 40. And the sons of Ulam were mighty men of valour, archers, and had many sons, and sons sons son and hundred and fifty. All these are the sons of Benjamin.

1 Chronicles 8:33-40

The family of Saul is here taken notice of. Several sons he had, but the line of Jonathan only is continued for about ten generations to Ulam, whose family was much increased, and remarkable for their valour, and use of the bow or fling. The name of a valiant Soldier is great, but that of a faint of God greater.
