Manaffeh was a divided lot, part on one side of Jordan, part on the other. Machir, who was distinguished for his valour, and his posterity inherited in Gilead and Bashan. The other families had their lots in Canaan, which were divided into six shares, according to the number of the sons of Gilead here mentioned. Zelophehad the son of Hepher having no male issue, his share was subdivided between his five daughters. They had claimed it in the wilderness before the conquest, and God having approved of their plea, they might well plead their right, and assuredly succeed. Note, If in the wilderness of the world we secure a title to glory, under the Divine promise, we shall not fail, when the conquest by death is compleated, to possess our inheritance.

7. And the coast of Manaffeh was from After to Michmetah, that land before Garchen, and the border went along on the right-hand unto the inhabitants of En-tappuah. 8. Now Manaffeh had the land of Tappuah: but Tappuah on the border of Manaffeh belonged to the children of Ephraim. 9. And the coast descended unto the river Kanah, southward of the river: the cities of Ephraim are among the cities of Manaffeh: the coast of Manaffeh also was on the north-side of the river, and the out-goings of it were at the sea. 10. Southward it was Ephraim’s, and northward it was Manaffeh’s, and the sea is his border, and they met together in After on the north, and in Ifachar on the east. 11. And Manaffeh had in Ifachar and in After, Beth-sheen and her towns, and Ibleem and her towns, and the inhabitants of Dor and her towns, and the inhabitants of Taanach and her towns, and the inhabitants of Megiddo and her towns, even three countries. 12. Yet the children of Manaffeh could not drive out the inhabitants of those cities, but the Canaanites would dwell in that land. 13. Yet it came to pass, when the children of Ifrael were weaken strong, that they put the Canaanites to tribute; but did not utterly drive them out.

Joshua 17:7-13

We have here the borders of Manaffeh, lying contiguous to Ephraim, and intermixed with it; Ephraim possessing several cities within their lot, as they also possessed some towns and villages in the lots of Ifachar and After, on which their other border lay. They also suffered the Canaanites to live among them, negligent to improve the advantage God gave them at first, and suffering them to strengthen themselves in judgment afterwards, that they were not able to drive them out; but they became in some tributary, and thus were more serviceable than if destroyed. Note, (1.) If we lose the opportunity God puts in our power, when we would afterwards succeed, it is too late. (2.) God can bring good to us out of our evil; but that is so excuse for sinful negligence. (3.) Ephraim’s conduct probably led them into this they, so easily do we follow the bad example of others, and plead them for our exculpation.
