Nehemiah 7
HAWEISNehemiah 7:1-4
The city being fortified, we have here, 1. A constant guard appointed, etc. 1-4. 2. A review of the people, in order to supply the city with inhabitants, etc. 5-23
- NOW it came to pass when the wall was built, and I had set up the doors, and the porters, and the fingers, and the Levites were appointed. 2. That I gave my brother Hanani, and Hananiah the ruler of the palace, charge over Jerusalem: (for he was a faithful man, and feared God above many). And I said unto them, Let not the gates of Jerusalem be opened, until the sun be hot; and while they stand by let them shut the doors, and bar them: and appoint watches of the inhabitants of Jerusalem, every one in his watch, and every one to be over against his house. 4. Now the city was large and great: but the people were few therein, and the houses were not built.
The wall being finished, and the gates set up, the Levites, porters, and fingers, who had afflicted at the work, returned to their service in the temple; and Nehemiah being, as a generally supposed, obliged to return for a fusion to Babylon, (from whence he came afterwards, and for twelve years presided over the Jewish State) he endeavours to provide for their safety during his absence. His brother Hanani, and Hananiah, a man eminent for his fear of God, are appointed to take care of the city, which, though walled, was thinly peopled, and the houses in general lay in ruins; and as he had just cause to suspect the designs of the enemy, to prevent surprise, he appoints a guard of the inhabitants to watch the city by night, each against his own house; enjoins the governors to see the gates carefully shut at evening, and not to be opened till the sun had been some time risen, that if any ambush was laid near the city, it might be discovered. Note, (1.) They who are eminent for the fear of God above many, are the benefit to be trusted with any public charge, because they will make conscience of fulfilling it. (2.) They who would be always safe, must always be upon their guard. (3.) Every man’s family is his great concern: he hath need well watch over them night and day, if he would preserve them from the destroyer.
- ¶ And my God put into mine heart to gather together the nobles, and the rulers, and the people, that they might be reckoned by genealogy: and I found a register of the genealogy of them which came up at the first, and found written therein. 6. There are the children of the province, that went up out of the captivity, of those that had been carried away, whom Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had carried away, and came again to Jerusalem, and to Judah, every one unto his city. 7. These fought their regifter among those that were reckoned by genealogy, but it was not found: “therefore were they, as polluted, put from the priesthood. 65. Nehemiah 7:5-73
Jerusalem being so thinly peopled, Nehemiah contrives to replenish it with inhabitants; for which purpose, having assembled the rulers and people, he reviews the old regifter of those who came out of captivity, that he might see what familes originally belonged to Jerusalem, but were now dispersed in the country, in order to bring them back to fix their dwelling there. He acknowledges the design was from God, to whom every gracious motion is to be skcribed: if any thing good be in our hearts, it is his work, and to him should the praise be given. The regifter here recited is nearly the same with that, Ezra xi. 6-5. The small variation in the numbers may be probably owing to that having been taken in Babylon, this, after they arrived at Jerusalem. Some perhaps that at first gave in their names to go, went back; whilst others, though they stuck out till the last, when they saw the camp morning, resolved to follow it. Now, There will be ever some that lay their hand to the plow, and look back: the Lord keep us from that number.—The contributions, v. 70. are so different from Ezra xi. 68, 69, that it seems not the same, but some additional offering made afterwards. They who have God’s work at heart, will not only give according to their power, but, as he increases their store, will renew their grateful tribute.
