Psalms 117

Psalms 117:1

This psalm contains a prophecy of gospel grace to the Gentiles. 1. They are called to praise God, ver. 1. 2. Proper matter for that praise suggested, ver. 2.

1. Praise the LORD, all ye nations: praise him, all ye people. 2. For his merciful kindness is great towards us: and the truth of the LORD endureth for ever. Praise ye the LORD.

2. This short psalm is full of the most blessed tidings to the Gentile world, who in the fulness of time should be called into the fellowship of the gospel, and with the converted Jews become one fold under one shepherd.

3. The redeemed out of all nations are called upon to praise the Lord: to them the gospel was to be preached, and in consequence of their obedience to the faith, they would be admitted into the assembly of the church, and join in the songs of redeeming love.

4. Rich matter for their praises is suggested, v. 2. For his merciful kindness is great towards us, or both abounded over as kindness and mercy, vast as the waters of the deluge, abounding to the chief of sinners, extending to millions of soft souls, securing to them pardon, strength, comfort, glory, and the eternity, because the truth of the Lord endureth for ever, and his faithfulness is engaged to make good to all believers, not of the Jews only, but of the Gentiles also, the promises of the everlasting covenant; therefore praise ye the Lord.
