Welcome to the Common Room explore it and let the Spirit of the house enlighten you. The Common Room is a sitting room for all the students of God after their lectures, where they chat and are doing everyday life, some are taking a nap, others are singing, some are talking about the teachings of their classes, with other words it’ s the fellowship room of the students but even here the Owner of the house wants fellowship with them as well.

Walking in love. (We can walk in His love) V.1-2 a) Trademark - (Feet) Holy focus.

Our focus manifests the condition of our body. Matt.6:22-23 God has left us footprints to follow in Jesus Christ, the marks are covered with the fragrance of love, even this life is a sweet smell to God. The trademark is: Follow and walk - give and sacrifice.

V.3-4 c) Talking - (Mouth) Holy talking.

Our talk manifests the condition of our heart. Matt.12:33-37 All kinds of foolish and empty talking that disgrace people or Christian moral, both immoral sexual talk, greedy money talk, empty talk and joking.

V.4 d) Thanksgiving - (Heart) Holy praise.

If we see the true condition of our heart, both our evil old nature and our holy new nature in Christ we can only give thanks to God. V.20 V.5-6 e) Truth - (Mind) Holy knowing.

Paul spoke these words to believers and not to unbelievers. There is talking about people who continue with an unrepentant heart He warns us against being deceived, to think that if believers practice such that they will inherit the kingdom of God. John 3:18; 1.Cor.6:9-11; Heb.6:4-8; 10:26-29, 39; Rev.3:5 V.7 f) Transformation - (Lifestyle) Holy separation.

We should be partakers of Christ and be transformed to His image, not conformed to the world. Rom.12:2; 2.Cor.3:18

Ephesians 5:8-13

  1. The Proof and Reason for Our Walk (5:8-13)

Walking as children of light. (We can walk in His Sonship) V.8 a) Fire -

Because we are His children we have within us fiery glory that causes us to shine. We not only did works of darkness but we were darkness. We are not only doing works of light but we are light in the Lord.

V.9-10 b) Fruit -

Because we are His children we have the Spirit of God within us and He causes His fruit to grow. Gal.5:22-23; John 15:1-6 He will cause us to choose what is tasteful to God. Rom.12:2; Heb.5:14 V.11 c) Fellowship -

Because we are His children we ought to fellowship with God and not with darkness. John 8:37-47; 1.Cor.10:20-22; 2.Cor.6:14-18 V.12 d) Filth -

Darkness causes shame and is afraid of the light.

V.13 e) Freedom -

One small sharp light can expose a big dark room. To allow God expose darkness in our lives brings freedom.

Ephesians 5:14-18

  1. The Power and Provision for Our Walk (5:14-18)

Walking circumspectly. (We can walk in His perfection) V.14 a) Wake-up -

A believer can fall into a sleeping position where he lives in a dream world, we should be believers who is awake and useful for God. First awake then arise and then be a light. 1.Kings 19:1-8; Matt.26:36-46 V.15 b) Wisdom -

After the light has shone we can see. When there is light then we can walk perfectly and exactly in His ways. Wisdom is to act upon what we know.

V.16 c) Watchful -

One way to walk exactly in His ways is to manage our time rightly. We have to be watchful of our time. Ps.89:47; 90:10-12; Col.4:5; Eph.6:12; Rom.13:12 V.17 d) Will -

When His light shines in our lives then we understand what the will of the Lord is.

V.18 e) Wine -

No believer should ever be drunk in alcohol but rather be filled with the Spirit. Prov.23:29-35; Acts 2:1-13; 4:23-31

Ephesians 5:19-21

  1. As to One’ s Self and the Church (5:19-21)

7 fold behaviour 5:19-6:9

  1. Christian’ s behaviour to believers. 5:19-21

  2. Wife’ s behaviour to husbands. 5:22-24

  3. Husband’ s behaviour to wives. 5:25-33

  4. Children’ s behaviour to parents. 6:1-3

  5. Father’ s behaviour to children. 6:4

  6. Servant’ s behaviour to masters. 6:5-8

  7. Master’ s behaviour to servants. 6:9

V.19 a) Singing -

4 ways that the Spirit filling is being manifested:

  1. Psalms - Songs accompanied with instruments. Old Testament psalms.

  2. Hymns - Songs not necessary accompanied with instruments. Inspired songs.

  3. Spiritual songs - Any kind of song sung in honour to God.

  4. In your heart - Every song to God expressed inaudibly.

V.20 b) Stirring -

We should be stirring up thanksgiving to God through all things, Paul is an example of that. Acts 16:25-26; Eph.1:16; 1.Thes.5:18 V.21 c) Submission -

As we fear God we will also submit to one another.

The 5 way of walking in Ephesians can be likened to the 5 offerings of Israel.

  1. The sin offering - Walk worthy of the calling. 4:1-6; Lev.Ch.4
  2. The peace offering - No longer walk. 4:17-24; Lev. Ch.3
  3. The burnt offering - Walk in love. 5:1-6; Lev.Ch.1
  4. The trespass (Guilt) offering - Walk as children. 5:8-13; Lev.Ch.5
  5. The grain offering - Walk circumspectly. 5:15-21; Lev.Ch.2

Ephesians 5:22-33

  1. As to One’ s Home (5:22-6:4) V.22-24 a) Willing submission -

3 reasons wives should submit to their husbands:

  1. It is submission to the Lord, even as wives submit to the Lord they should submit to their husbands.

  2. It is submission to the position of the divine position, even as the head of the Church is the Lord they should allow their husbands to be the head of the home.

  3. It is submission to the divine ordained authority even as the Church submit to the Lord they should submit to their husbands in everything.

V.25 b) Wholehearted love -

I. Husband should love their wives with a greater love, love that is strong as death. Songs 8:6 II. God didn’ t take the bone from man’ s feet that he should trample the woman, He didn’ t take it from the head that he should be exalted above her, but He took it from his side under his arm that he should care and protect her. Songs.2:4 V.26-27 c) Washing of water by the Word -

Husbands should manifest wisdom like Christ:

I. Sharing the Word of God with her and thereby washing her mind from worldliness and sins.

II. The goal of any husband should not be the outward beauty of their wives but the inward holiness.

III. Husbands should seek to present his wife glorious for she is the glory of himself. 1.Cor.11:7 IV. Conclusion: He should love as strong as death, sanctify, cleanse and wash her, present her glorious.

V.28-33 d) Wise love -

Real love manifested through wisdom is shown in:

I. Loving their wife as themselves for they are one flesh.

II. Loving their wife in helping her to mature in person and in the Lord.

III. In understanding (It is a mystery that is now revealed) Christ love for the Church and manifesting that same love to their wife.
