6 all his house died together. All his sons who were in the battle were slain; see 1 Sam. xxxi. 6. Ish-bosheth, and some others who were not there, survived.

9 to carry tidings. Or, as in 1 Sam. xxxi. 9, “to publish.” The Hebrew words are the same.

10 in the house of their gods. In the house of Ashtaroth (1 Sam. xxxi. 10). So David had deposited Goliath’s sword in the tabernacle as a trophy.

13 against the word of the Lord. Saul had broken God’s law by offering sacrifice (1 Sam. xiii. 13); and still more by sparing the king and the spoil of the Amalekites (1 Sam. xv. 11).

for asking counsel, etc. Though Saul did at first inquire of the Lord, yet when he received no answer (1 Sam. xxviii. 6), because God was displeased with him, instead of repenting and confessing his past sins, he went to the woman at Endor.
