2 the chief ruler. The two rights of primogeniture—the sovereignty and a double portion of the inheritance—were divided between Judah and Joseph: see note on Gen. xlviii. 5; xlix. 8.

10. Hagarites. Or, “Hagarenes,” descendants of Hagar; a branch of the Ishmaelites, appropriating the maternal name. A further account of a successful raid is given in vers. 18-22. The enmity between Hebrews and Hagarenes appears in Psa. lxxxiii. 5-8.

17. Jotham . . . and . . . Jeroboam. As these two kings were not contemporaries, there were evidently two registrations.
