5. Uzzi. Josephus (Antiquities, v. 11, 5) says that after Uzzi the high-priesthood went into the family of Ithamar; and his statement is confirmed by the fact that five generations are given from Uzzi and Eli to Zadok and Abiathar, who were contemporary: see note on 1 Sam. ii. 35. The list of the high-priestly family (4-15) is evidently shortened, and the names of some eminent members are omitted: cp. 2 Chron. xxiii.; xxvi. 17; xxxi. 10.

14. Seraiah. Seraiah was high priest at the capture of Jerusalem, and was put to death by Nebuchadnezzar.

22. The sons of Kohath. It appears from Numb. xxvi. 11 that Korah’s sons did not perish with him; and from vers. 27-33 below, that among his descendants were Samuel the prophet and Herman the singer.

28. Vashni. The name of “Joel” appears to have been lost out of the text here (see 1 Sam. viii. 2), and the word “vashni,” which signifies and the second, and applies to Abiah, is made into a proper name: see R.V.

33. Heman. Heman was grandson to Samuel (here called “Shemuel,” which is a literal transcript of the Hebrew), the prophet and judge.

39. Asaph. Asaph and Heman were both Levites; but the one was descended from Gershom, the other from Kohath.

54 dwelling places. The race of Aaron all resided in the district allotted to the two tribes of Judah and Benjamin.

castles. Rather, as R.V., “according to their encampments.”

60 thirteen cities. Only eleven are here named; two others, Jutta and Gibeon, are mentioned in Josh. xxi. 16, 17. These had perhaps ceased to exist when this book was written. The list of Levitical cities given in the remainder of this chapter should be compared with Josh. xxi., which appears, from internal and collateral evidence, to be the more accurate text.
