3. Ammonite or Moabite. A solemn intimation of the fatal consequences of attempting to injure, and especially to lead astray, the people of God. See Numb. xxv. 16-18.

6. Peace. Heb. “completeness” or welfare.

7 an Edomite. At a later period the peculiar malignity of the Edomites brought upon them special executions; see Psa. cxxxvii. 7; Isa. lxiii. 1-6, and notes.

an Egyptian. This shows that the preceding laws were not to be taken as allowing a vindictive spirit towards enemies and oppressors, for the Israelites are here taught to requite good for evil.

14 holy. The term “holy” is here used as denoting the removal of that which is offensive even in material things.

15 master. That is, foreign master. The land of Israel was to be (as our own country now is) an asylum for the oppressed of all nations. Cp. Uncle Tom’s Cabin, especially chs. ix.-xiii.

24 the grapes. This used to be, and perhaps still is, the custom in Germany, where the pedestrian might pluck grapes or cherries by the roadside, enough to quench his thirst.
