3 in the middle gate. Probably a gate which led from the lower city to the fortress on Zion. Zedekiah fled by an opposite gate on the south, leading to the king’s garden, near the junction of the valleys of Kidron and Hinnom.

Rab-saris . . . Rab-mag. “Rab-saris” means chief of the eunuchs; and “Rab-mag” chief of the Magi. These were the titles of the officers whose names precede them: see ver. 13 and 2 Kings xviii. 17.

14. Gedaliah. The son of the nobleman who had before befriended Jeremiah (see xxvi. 24).

15. Now the word of the Lord came, etc. These verses, to the end of the chapter, are an appendix to the history, describing what had taken place before the capture of the city: see xxxviii. 13.
