Jeremiah 40

1 from Ramah. By comparing this account with that in xxxix. 11-14, it appears that Jeremiah, contrary to the king’s command, was carried as a prisoner as far as Ramah (only six miles from Jerusalem); the prophet being then set at liberty, and, on his choosing to remain in his own country, being placed under the protection of Gedaliah.

6. Mizpah. This was the Mizpah in Benjamin, about four miles north-west of Jerusalem, now called Nebi Samiil.

10 to serve the Chaldeans. Lit., as R.V., “to stand before the Chaldeans,” i.e., to serve in an official capacity, a different phrase from that in ver. 9.

gather ye wine, etc. Betokening a state of security. Corn is not mentioned, as the harvest season was past; Jerusalem having been taken in the fourth month (June-July).
