REFLECTIONS UPON CHAP. XXVII.—It is happy when children imitate their parents’ goodness, and carefully avoid their faults. But hard is the task to bring an obdurate people off from their corrupt customs. And often magistrates and ministers, who are tender and circumspect in their own lives, have not courage and zeal enough for doing what they might in the reformation of others. A fixed stedfastness in the truth is the most necessary, and at the same time the most excellent, mean for the resistance of evil and performance of good. What reward hath godliness?—it hath the promises of this life, and that which is to come! But alas! the best magistrates and ministers are often quickly removed, and that in order to make way for monsters to fill their place
