Companions of the Way (Morning)If we sin, we are Thine, knowing Thy power: but we will not sin, knowing that we are counted Thine.
"THE steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord." What of the sinner? Why, there is not one step of all his erring way that God has not beset with shame, and guilt, and punishment. Sinners and saints alike choose God. But we may choose God as love and fortitude, joy at the heart of pain, contentment at the heart of strenuous toil, peace at the heart of sacrifice, —or we may choose Him as the ceaseless, dim regret that comes to the most hardened,—the consciousness that we may stifle, but cannot kill, of spiritual treachery,—the haunting sense of an immeasurable loss that turns all earthly gain to ashes and to dust. Even the sins that seem to retard us most are sins that will not let us rest until we rest in God.
