Simply to do what we ought is an altogether higher, diviner, more potent, more creative thing than to write the grandest poem, paint the most beautiful picture, carve the mightiest statue, dream out the most enchanting commotion of melody and harmony.
A man is relieved and gay when he has put his heart into his work, and done his best; but what he has said or done otherwise shall give him no peace.
