This is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent. — JOHN xvii. 3.

If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also: and from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him. — JOHN xiv. 7.

BY the examination of the context of this passage it is apparent that these disciples knew many things concerning Christ: that is, they knew him so far as faith enabled them to know him to be the Son of God, the true Messiah, and the Saviour of the world. But this is a tacit reproof because they did not know him more fully and perfectly as one with the Father, similar in meaning to John viii. 19, where in answer to the question, "Where is thy Father?" Jesus answered, "Ye neither know me nor my Father: if ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also."
