(Celtic: art, stone)

Sixth-century British chieftain. He championed the oppressed natives against Angle and Saxon invaders. A cycle of romance grew up about his adventures and his Knights of the Round Table which inspired Malory’s Morte Arthure, Spenser’s Faerie Queene, and Tennyson’s Idylls of the King. Arthur is the type of perfect Christian knighthood.
