A wise son makes a glad father

The Proverbs of Solomon. A wise son maketh a glad father, but a foolish son is the heaviness of his mother. A wise son maketh a glad father, but a foolish son is the heaviness of his mother.

Now, I don't want to talk about a foolish son. I could give you a life history. I'm not going to do that.

I want to talk about the Lord Jesus. This weekend, I read the notice that was put on the email that we're going to see Christ in Luke chapter 2, in Philippians chapter 2, in Hebrews chapter 2, in Leviticus chapter 2. You know, if we could finish the weekend with our minds full of the person of Christ, it would change us forever. So I want to see what the father found in his son.

For a wise son maketh a glad father. Recall when the Lord Jesus was a young boy in Luke chapter 2. He increased in wisdom and stature and favor with God and with men. There was favor with God found in his son.

And so as God looked upon his son, there's a delight that he found in him as he moved through the scene. Because the Lord Jesus did everything that the father had showed him. His works were not his.

John 5, the works that the father gave him to do testified of him. He says, my doctrine is not mine, but the father which sent me. And right through John's gospel, you'll find the Lord Jesus is occupied with being sent by the father.

In chapter 8, he says, I am not alone, but the father which sent me is with me. Now listen to this. I do always those things that please him.

Now, you're all sons and daughters of parents. Can any of us ever say that about our lives? That in our lives, we always did those things that pleased our parents. If you can, I admire you.

I had many a spanking. I got it at the school too. They didn't mind hitting you then.

When you were misbehaving, it was the Lord Jesus never did that. In fact, it's interesting and we'll talk about it at the conference, but I'll just pass it on. He said when his mother and father sort of chided him a bit because he stayed behind in Jerusalem.

I must be in the things of my father. Do you get the difference? I must be about my father's business. For close to 40 years.

I went about the business of Manitoba Hydro. I can assure you I wasn't always in the business of Manitoba Hydro. There was times when I didn't really want to do what I had to do.

There was never a moment in the life of the Lord Jesus. That he was not cognizant of the father's will and did not have a delight in doing the will of his father. Listen to Psalm 40.

Lo, I come in the volume of the book. It is written of me. I delight to do thy will.

Oh my God. Yeah, thy law is within my heart. They might find interest in those who study your Bible that that verse is quoted again in Hebrews chapter 10 with one word missing the word delight.

Lo, I come in the volume of the book. It is written of me to do thy will. And this is a little bit to the side, but just for your interest in Psalm 40 is burnt offering truth.

A sweet savor rising up to heaven in Hebrews 10 made an offering for sin. Once it's an offering truth. Now, of course, I must be careful because maybe some of the students will say, well, there's a sweet savor in the sin offering and there is you may recall that and and I'm this is still in line with my with what's on my mind in the in the offerings.

There was a burnt offering and there was the meal offering chapter 2 and there was a peace offering chapter 3 and they were all sweet savor offerings a sweet savor arose to heaven and the speak of Christ. We're going to learn that but we'll come to chapter 4 the sin offering in chapter 5 the trespass offering and we learn or we're told they're not sweet savor offerings. Is that true? I'm not getting any nods or shaking in the head.

I'm just wondering. Well, they are and they aren't. Listen to what I learn in chapter 4 that with the sin offering for the people when the fats in the in the fat and the inwards were taken and placed on the altar doesn't what it says for a sweet savor.

It's an offering for a sweet savor. And so even in the death of Christ. Outside there's that consuming fire but the flame on the brazen altar was a an incense flame a gentle flame and even in the awfulness of the midst of the offering for sin there inside on the altar.

There was a fat in the inwards arising heavenward as a sweet savor to God. God found a delight in the death of his son even in the offering for sin. But in Psalm 40 in Mr. Newberry's margin again lo I come in the volume of the book.

It is written of me and this ties in with John 8. I delight to do thy pleasure. Isn't that nice? I'd like to do that. I will.

Well, the soldiers do the will of their of their captain. They got no delight in it quite often. You may work at a job.

You do the will of your supervisor. You may get no delight in it. Lord Jesus says I delight to do thy pleasure.

I delight to do thy pleasure and God looked upon his son. And every step that he took every word that he said every work that he did brought delight to his father. So when we come to Mark chapter 1 there on Jordan's banks were a scene, you know Philip you were there.

We were in Israel and you know what they did. They had a young lady and on the Jordan River. They baptized her something but here was a greater scene and that was a wonderful scene.

Here was a greater scene. The Lord Jesus in the Jordan River and a voice came from heaven. What is it? This is my beloved son in whom I am well pleased.

Is it the start of his public ministry and those years and we're going to learn about hidden years when on Lord's Day when we come to the meal offering and those hidden years were seen by the father and he looked on his son and he delighted. He delighted in him. Isn't that isn't that wonderful? When we come to Luke chapter 9 we're now on the mountaintop and there is Peter James and John and they're with the Lord Jesus and we hear again the voice of the father to him.

This is my beloved son in whom I am well pleased and so we find there's a delight. There's a joy that the father finds in his son. But listen when you come to Philippians chapter 2 and we're going to be touching that too.

Maybe we'll find something in all these chapters about the Lord Jesus but the fine flower in Luke chapter 2 speaking of Christ and the perfections of his person and the sweet savor rising up to heaven. Yeah, but in Philippians chapter 2 wherefore God is taking his son and he's highly exalted him and given him a name above every name there at the name of Jesus. Every knee should bow of things in earth and things in heaven and things under the earth.

Every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord. What's the father done? He's taken his son and he's highly exalted him. We'll go to Hebrews chapter 1. We're in the Hebrew, Hebrew epistle.

And we did this thy throne. Oh God is forever and ever a scepter of righteousness is a scepter of thy kingdom. There was love righteousness and hated lawlessness wherefore God even I God had anointed thee.

Watch this now with the oil of gladness above thy fellows. Do you think the father delights in the son? He's going to sit him up on a throne. Oh, what a day that's going to be.

The Lord Jesus is going to come back. Maybe you read in the book of Isaiah. I'm coming up at the wilderness and he's covered in blood.

He's going to stop. I believe at the brook Kidron and he's going to wash himself there. Psalm 110 the last verse will tells you that he'll he'll he'll drink off the brook by the way.

I think that's a scene the Lord coming back. Zechariah chapter 9 is going to be placed on a colt the fall of an ass. Now.

I know Matthew 21 tells you that that took place already and it did but you read very carefully Zechariah chapter 9 and you will understand it's more than just a Matthew 21 scene and it takes you to a future day and I think the Lord's going to come from Revelation 19 the rider on the white horse the battles over the victory says is coming to the city. The gates will be opened the Muslim grave will be gone. You saw that Philip it'll be gone.

He's going to get on a colt the fall of an ass and he's going to ride in triumph in glory is going to ride into the city. What shall be done? You remember you remember in your Old Testament? What shall be done unto the man that the King delight is to honor here? He is is going to be honored by God. He's going to be honored by the people.

He's going to be a king and he's going to sit is going to sit upon the throne. So the Hebrew writer will find his he's a he's a king who's seated in government upon his throne. It's nice to see how the Lord seated in the Hebrew Epistle.

If you study your Bible look at those things and you'll get a nice line of them being seated through John's gospel. But in chapter 1 it's a throne of government. Because he's going to rain in chapter 4. So that's what we enjoy.

We come to the throne of grace. What do we find? We find grace to help in time of need. You've been there.

If you haven't you better get there the throne of grace in chapter 8. He's seated on a throne of Majesty and in chapter 12. He's seated on the throne of God. And so there's the the wise son that made glad the heart of his father.

I was reading a verse in Jude. I'm going to I'm going to quote it because I'm not going to quote it. I'm going to read it.

If I can turn to Jude here. The last verse verse 24. Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory.

What's this now? With exceeding joy. That's you and I. The Lord Jesus in that day. The one who kept us and he's able to keep us.

You know. He says he says to the disciples. He says Satan hath desire to have you that he may sift you as sweet.

But I have prayed for you that your faith fail not speaking to Peter and he's addressing the other disciples as well says when you are converted strengthen your brethren. Now just explain that verse just in a moment. I know we seem to have gone a lot of places, but you'll get the just Satan wants you.

Jude says is able to keep you from falling and he's looking forward to a day when he's going to present you faultless. I guess before the father. Now Satan has desire to have you that he may sift you as sweet.

Now I read some commentaries and really I don't understand their thinking process because they say it's going to get rid of the chaff. Satan never got rid of a bit of chaff in his life. Satan wants to bury in it.

Doesn't want to separate you from it. What's the Lord talking about? Satan wants to do Satan desires to have you and I'll use a little translation on the words that he may cause you to lose your sense of purpose your sense of direction. Right, you know a sift you put the grains of wheat in and you shake it there that way and there that way and you'll get a little bit about the word sift the the word in the septuagint similar word in Amos chapter 8 for ships that wander in the sea going to and fro the blown about with the wind.

Satan wants you to lose your sense of direction who lost his sense of direction. Peter did. He said I don't know the man.

I don't know him. With oaths and curses. He was quite strong about it.

It wasn't just a slip of the tongue. It was very deliberate. He lost his sense of direction, but the Lord says I've prayed for you and when you are converted now, what does the word converted mean? It means to be turned around when you get straightened out when you find your sense of direction when you get back on the goal get back on the pathway strengthen your brethren.

Now, what does the Lord do in John 21? What does he do to Peter? He says to Peter. I want you to look after the sheep and the lambs. I want you to feed them and tend them the man that said I don't know the man.

Do you know what happened Corinthians 15? The Lord Jesus met with Peter were told no details. No details nothing. He just met with Peter and Peter got back in fellowship with the Lord and when John Christ and John 21 it's it's the Lord what does Peter do? He says cloak around him and he jumps into the sea and he can't get to the Lord quick enough.

He's delighting in in the Lord. There was a joy but listen a little bit more about the joy and then I'm finished. Hebrews 12 again.

Who for the joy that was set before him what's the joy that was set before him endured the cross despising the shame? Okay, we'll go to we'll go to Isaiah 53. Listen to this now. He shall see of the travail of his soul and shall be satisfied.

I love it. I love it. I think in Hebrews chapter 12.

I think there we see the Saints and the Lord's going to see them and he's going to for the joy that was set before him. The Saints are going to one day be gathered around him and it's a joy to him. Israel Isaiah 53 is going to look back.

I can almost see the Lord sitting on that throne and they're the Saints of all ages around him. He shall see of the travel of his soul. You look back on Calvary you look back on those scenes of shame and indignation and sorrow days of darkness deep calleth unto deep at the noise of thy waters spouts all thy waves and billows went over me.

He's going to look at it all. He's going to look at his own child of God. He shall be satisfied.

A wise son make it a glad father.
