We give God praise for this morning again. And we are looking up to him for all that he has in store for us today. I would like us to bow our heads as we pray, as we take this devotional challenge this morning.
Shall we pray? Dear Father, once again we thank you for this new day. We thank you, Father, because you are the living God who daily loots us with benefits. We're grateful that in your mercy you've gathered us across different nations.
Thank you, Lord, that you have declared in your Word, you have not said to the house of Jacob, seek him in vain. And so, Lord, our eyes are on you, our hearts are expecting. Just as your Word did come last night, that this beginning of miracles.
Lord, we are trusting you that, God, you will rot mightily among us even this day. As we come, Lord, looking into your Word this morning, on the issues of our personal communion with you, we pray, Father, that you will be gracious unto us, you will speak to our lives. We pray, Father, that you will rekindle your fire on each of our altars.
We look to you that beyond our asking, Lord, you will help us. In Jesus' name we are praying, Amen. Amen.
This morning, our devotional challenge will be focusing on the issue of our personal or individual altar. And we'll be looking at the need to have and to maintain our personal communion, our personal altar. And as the Lord may be guiding us, we'll be looking at God's wisdom on how to go about it.
We'll read a few scriptures, but first I want us to begin with the book of Hebrews, chapter 11. Turn with me to Hebrews 11. Hebrews chapter 11.
And we shall be reading verses 8 to 12. Hebrews 11. We'll read verse 8 to 12.
I'll be reading from the New King James Version. Hebrews 11, verse 8 to 12. By faith, Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to the place he received as an inheritance.
And he went out, not knowing where he was going. By faith, he dwelt in the land of promise, as in a foreign country, dwelling in tents with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise. For he waited for the city which has foundations, whose builder and maker is God.
Verse 11. By faith, Sarah herself also received strength to conceive seed, and she bore a child when she was past the age because she judged him faithful who had promised. Verse 12.
Therefore, from one man and him as good as they were born as many as the stars of the sky in multitude, innumerable as the sun, which is by the seashore. I will be reading other passages as we go along by the grace of God. As we consider the issue of our personal altar, and the need to have a personal altar, the need to maintain our personal altar, and our God will help us that despite all the demands of family, all the demands of raising children, all the demands of work schedules, we're able to maintain it.
I was led of the Lord to begin this by looking at this passage that is before us this morning. I sense the way to consider the issue of personal altar is more than just the matter of our personal quiet time. I sense it's going deeper to the matter of our prayer life, the matter of our personal communion as it were with the Lord.
The first thing that I want to draw attention to, brethren, this morning is how crucial that is in our marriage relationship. The need, just wanting to emphasize briefly, the need that as husband or as a wife, we must build our own personal communion with the Lord. You will note with me from the passage we read, it says, by faith Abraham obeyed when he was called out to go to the place which he will receive as an inheritance.
Our focus this morning is not on the issue of faith. But we're looking at the matter of their faith as a result of their walk with the Lord. You note that earlier on in that Hebrews 11, the scripture has laid it clearly that for anyone who will please God, there's a way to walk with him.
He must walk with God by faith. But what is touching my attention, I mean, catching my attention that I wanted to draw our attention to this morning is that the scripture began by saying, Abraham, by faith, he obeyed when he was called out to go to a place which he will receive as an inheritance. And he went out not knowing where he was going.
The scripture followed that even the way he dwelled in the land of promise was by faith. What does that say to us that I wanted us to note? It was that whatever we saw about Abraham, whatever action we saw Abraham take, they were not arbitrary. They were springing out of his relationship with God.
They were springing out of his knowledge of God, out of his communion with God. You see, the scripture says he obeyed when he was called out to go to the place which he will receive. That is, he had heard God.
He was in a communion, as it were, with the Lord. And so when God spoke, he obeyed. He had a personal walk with God.
He was in communion with the Lord. And all else that we see about Abraham that is noteworthy today, that enabled him, together with his wife, to fulfill the divine purpose. They were springing out of their relationship with God.
Now I want to remind us what the Lord pointed our attention to last night as we were looking at that John chapter 2. You will note that the instruction the Lord Jesus gave, I mean, sorry, that Mary gave to the servant was, Whatsoever he says to you, do. Now I'm bringing this in because there's no way a man can actually walk in the light of God's counsel except he's in fellowship with God. The first matter I wanted us to note, Abraham had a walk with God.
Abraham was in communion with God. And all else we see about him in his marriage, in his life, was springing out of that personal communion, personal relationship with God. But what makes this passage a matter for me, as the Lord was bringing it to my attention, as we're looking at this matter of personal order, is as I now come to verse 11, I would like you to please note with me that Hebrews chapter 11 and the 11th verse.
The Holy Spirit says, What is the matter that I wanted us to please note? That whether as a husband, for us to have a fulfilling matrimony, it must be springing out of a communion of our personal fellowship with the Lord. For a husband to be a correct husband, to be able to provide leadership as we see in the case of Abraham here, it must be one that is in communion with the Lord. The Lord was taught again last night, as the word of God came, and the Holy Spirit was pointing to the fact that every man at the beginning brings forth the good wine.
And the servant of the Lord was saying, as the Lord brought the message yesterday, that it is natural, the law of the natural is the law of diminishing returns. That whatever is springing from the natural, it will diminish with time. What that means is that to sustain a fruitful and a fulfilling marriage, there's a need for connection to the divine source.
There's a need that there's a springing out of our communion as it were with the Lord. So for Abraham to be able to provide the kind of leadership we see in, that was not going to lead his wife, nor his family into the bush, it was from their communion with the Lord. It was from his personal fellowship with God.
Now, if all that we read ended there, there will have been no need to speak about our personal altar. It is that the Holy Spirit now says, by faith, Sarah herself also received strength to conceive seed. What that says to me is that it was not just Abraham who had the walk with God.
It was not Abraham alone who had personal communion with the Lord, Sarah herself. Let me note for wives that are listening. On one count, it is crucial.
A man did his family well to be the husband that God intends him to be, whether in the matter of loving his wife as he should. He must be in touch with the divine source, with the divine strength. He must be one that is in communion as it were with the Lord.
But beyond that, the wife also, the scripture says, Sarah herself also received strength. So, in the married relationship, we want to first note this morning. Both husband and wife must continually be in communion with the Lord.
Must continually be a people who touch base with heaven. Must be people who are having sweet communion, sweet fellowship with God. It looks to me, several issues will be easily resolved.
Several issues will take their proper place when you have a man at the head of the home who is in touch with heaven. And you have a wife who is also in communion with God. As I'm looking at the movement of Abraham, what is that Abraham might have added a problem in obeying God if he did not have a wife who also has a standing before God.
And you will agree with me that there are many times you'll find that a man is eager and is pushful for the things of God. He's earnest. He wants to do the will of God.
But because somehow the wife is not in tune, you'll find a problem. There are challenges we have met before. I don't intend to go into some of the things that may be said as we go on.
But there are challenges you have met in marriage before. Where a man says, this is the way God is leading. But because the wife has no hearing for God, she has not built her own personal relationship with God, it becomes a problem.
At other times, even when she's following, she may be doing so murmuring or passively. So I want to emphasize in this as we look at this, the matter of our personal altar this morning. As the man, the head of the home, if you must lead your house well, if you must be the man God intends you to be, it cannot be outside of drawing from the source of life.
That you are in communion continually as it were with the Lord. As a wife, it will not just be a baggage that is carried along. And if you will be the correct help as it were to your husband, it must be that you yourself, you have this personal altar that is within your communion as it were with the Lord.
You know what taught me, even though I don't want to dwell on this too long, from that Hebrews 11, is the way verse 12 now brings it with the word. I don't know how it is read in your own version, but in the New King James Version it says, Therefore, from one man, and him as good as dead, were born as many as the stars of the sky in multitude, innumerable as the sun which is by the seashore. Is the word, therefore, that actually taught me.
We read of Abraham, we read of his obedience, we read of his lifestyle, how he dwelled, and the scripture is saying all of this was springing out of his faith, out of his relationship with God. And then the Holy Spirit says, by faith, Sarah herself. And all that we saw about Sarah, then the scripture now says, therefore.
It looks that the robustness, the wholesomeness that we find in this couple's life was not just the question of maybe the man having a walk with God, having a personal growing fellowship with God, and the wife being otherwise. It is that both man and woman are in communion. They are in communion as it were with the Lord.
I am so touched as I look at the life of Sarah, and I want to again say only to all our sisters. It is not enough that your husband is praying for you or is praying with you. It is crucial that you are in continuous touch with heaven.
You will not be able to be the help that God intends you to be unless you are a woman who also have your personal standing in the presence of God. I'm touched when we look at 1 Peter 3, it points to the kind of woman that Sarah was. Will you mind if we just read that? 1 Peter 3, I don't also intend to dwell there, but just to point out something about the necessity of our personal communion, personal order, and our walk with the Lord.
1 Peter 3, I will just quickly read verse 1 to 6. 1 Peter 3, verse 1 to 6. My emphasis is not all that is spoken there, but just to point our attention to something. The Scripture says, Wives, likewise, be submissive to your own husbands, that even if some do not obey the word, they without the word may be warned by the conduct of their wives. When they observe your chaste conduct accompanied by fear, do not let your adornment be merely outward, arranging the heir, wearing gold or putting on fine apparel.
Verse 4, rather, let it be the hidden person of the heart, the incorruptible beauty of a gentle and a quiet spirit, which is very precious in the sight of God. Verse 5, for in this manner, in former times, the only women who trusted in God also adorned themselves, being submissive to their own husband. As Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him Lord, whose daughters you are, if you do good and are not afraid with any terror.
My focus is just that verse 4 and verse 5. The Scripture says the adornment, what should be the focus? What should be a priority in the life even of a wife, of a woman? It says, not the adornment of what is outward, but your inner life. Rather, let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the incorruptible beauty of a gentle and a quiet spirit, which is very precious in the sight of God. When God has a woman, a wife, who is meek, who God works on, what a treasure, what a blessing to that married.
And when we have a man who, by God's grace, is continuously in communion with the Lord, what a blessing it will be to his family. So the first critical matter I just wanted us to note in this morning, in the matter of our personal altar, is that both the man and his wife must be growing, must be progressive in their personal communion. It brings a genuine blessing onto the marriage.
Just taking an example about the life and the marriage of Abraham and Sarah, I would like us just to read Genesis 21, Genesis chapter 21, and we will read verse 9 to 12. Just something, again, my attention was drawn to, to see how the relationship they both have, how it became a blessing and a help, even in their union. Are you there with me? Genesis chapter 21, I would like to read verse 9 to 12.
It says, And Sarah saw the son of Aga, the Egyptian, whom she had borne to Abraham, scoffing. Verse 10. Therefore, she said to Abraham, Cast out this born woman and her son, for the son of this born woman shall not be heir with my son, namely with Isaac.
And the matter was very displeasing in Abraham's sight because of his son. But God said to Abraham, Do not let it be displeasing in your sight because of the lad or because of your born woman. Whatever Sarah has said to you, listen to her voice, for in Isaac your seed shall be called.
I'm touched as I look at this passage because we see what naturally transpires in a marital relationship. It is not every time that we will agree over a matter. It is not every time that what the husband is suggesting will be palatable to the wife.
It is not every time that what the wife is saying will be welcomed by the husband. But when God has both a man and a woman who is in touch with him, oh, it results many issues. I just wanted to look.
Here was a situation in marriage. I'm not dealing with all the details. I'm only making a reference to emphasize the need that as a man, we must not lag behind in keeping our communion with the Lord.
As a wife, you must be at your best in focusing on developing our personal relationship with the Lord. Now, the scripture says that Sarah saw what you call Ishmael as a mock Isaac. And she says, look, cast out this born woman and her son, for the son of this born woman shall not be heir with my son, namely with Isaac.
It sounds authoritative somehow. But as we learn about Sarah's life, we know she's a submissive woman. Now, I wanted us to note the response of Abraham to that.
The scripture says the matter was very displeasing in Abraham's sight because of his son. Here is a wife bringing the suggestion that the husband cannot take. No, no, no, no.
It cannot be like that. How was this resolved? Verse 12 says, but God. But God said to Abraham.
Now, I don't want us to miss a matter. As simple as that may sound, do you know it's not every man that hears God? Sometimes the issue as a husband, you are insisting upon. It may be somehow wanting to help your life, but you are insisting and saying and resisting whatever your wife is suggesting.
How wonderful it would be if you are a man who is in fellowship with God. If you are a man who is in communion with God, the Bible says, but God said to Abraham. Sarah has spoken.
Abraham is not pleased with it, but God. Because there is a man who is in communion with the Lord. He says, don't let what Sarah said displease you.
Because of the lad or because of your born woman. And it taught me that it was God who was not saying to Abraham, whatever Sarah has said to you, listen to her voice. You will note there brethren, that in the fall, the reason why one of the things that God rebuked Adam for was that he heard the voice of his wife.
You may wonder, does it not contradict the way of dealings and the set up of authority in the family? No. When what the wife is saying is of the Lord. But again, it takes a woman also who is in personal fellowship with God to be able to speak in a manner that will be helpful to the other.
Now did you see that God didn't just say, whatever Sarah said to you, listen to her voice. There was a reason. He said, because in Isaac your seed shall be called.
She is in tune with the counsel of God. The first challenge that is coming to me this morning for us to consider, dear brethren, is as the head of the home, as a man, are you one who hears God? Are you one who is in fellowship with God? And not just that you are speaking of the past, you are in continuous communion with the Lord. We like that as the Lord is bringing it to us here, to have a fruitful and a fulfilling matrimony.
This matter of our individual personal communion with God is critical. Yes, we will have family altar. Yes, we will pray together as couple.
But all of those will be enriched when we have men who are in tune with heaven. When we have wives who are in tune with God. Family issues and disagreements will be resolved easily when you have a man that is continually in fellowship with God.
Issues of obedience or submission will not be a big matter. When you have a wife, even when what the husband is saying is not seemingly immediately agreeable. If that woman is one who hears God.
As the Holy Spirit saying that whatsoever he says to you, do it. How wonderful it will be. Abraham could only arise to do what Sarah said because the scripture says what God said to Abraham.
And by God's grace, some of the blessings we see. I realize that it is not every time that as a husband, the man gets it right. But part of the help that God has packaged in the wife is such that if there is a woman who is also spiritual, who is also knowing the man of God, she can be able to supply that.
So the first critical matter, as we look at the need to have and to maintain our personal oath is that first as a man, as a wife, we must build our oath. It is basic. It is fundamental into enriching our matrimony, into our fulfilling, as it were, the purpose of God.
Now, within the short time that I have left, I just want to explore that. And how do we maintain this personal communion? Given the challenges of children upbringing, given the challenges of family life, given the challenges of workplace, how do we maintain our personal communion? Let me first note, dear brethren, that I sense if the enemy wants to scatter any life or any marriage, the first place it will knock at is your personal relationship with God. I think that is from several things we see in the scripture that is apparent.
The strength of God's people is the Lord himself. We have been taught over and over again that the greatest treasure any life can carry is the presence of God. Our Lord Jesus declared, as one of his teachings in the gospel, he said to the disciples, very soon all of you will leave me.
But he who sent me is with me. The father has never left me alone. If there's anything, first, that we see in the Lord Jesus that is instructive for us is that our greatest treasure is the presence of God in our life.
The greatest thing that we must cherish, we must focus on our personal communion, that there's nothing between our soul and the Savior. And honestly speaking, any backsliding, any cracking down of any life that affects marriage, normally, normally we begin with when personal communion with God has broken down. When personal fellowship with God has broken down, I recall in one of the teachings on the steps to betraying the master.
You will recall, as many of us have come through that message, that backsliding does not just happen suddenly. From the illustration of the life of Peter, it is when a life who has been in fellowship with God begin now to follow Jesus from a distance. And several things we want to come in between our personal communion with the Lord.
Sometimes there are legitimate things. Sometimes there are the challenges of raising up children. Sometimes there are the demands at our workplace.
But if we must maintain our communion with the Lord because we've seen its value, the first thing that I want us to note is it must be a priority. It must be a priority. Time will not allow me, but I want to count on our knowledge of Scripture to follow the passage in Luke chapter 10, verse 38 to 42.
We know the story well, the story of Jesus in the house of Martha. And I think as we read down, the Lord Jesus emphasized to Martha after she was occupied with how she was going to minister to the Lord with physical things, while Mary sat at His feet. The Lord did say, Martha, you are worried about many things, but one thing is needful.
If we will maintain our personal communion with the Lord, that is crucial to enriching our matrimony. Our personal communion with the Lord must be a priority. The psalmist says, one thing I have desired of the Lord, that will I seek after.
I will pursue it. He will pursue it because to Him, that is a priority. My dear brothers and sisters, can I ask, how is your personal fellowship with the Lord? As a husband, how is your personal fellowship with the Lord? If you reflect and look back, some of the challenges that are coming to your marriage, could it not be while you slept? Could it not be while something began to go wrong in your fellowship with God? I want to sincerely say marital unfaithfulness does not happen quickly, particularly for somebody who has had a walk with God.
It begins with a drifting. It begins when your personal fellowship with the Lord is no longer a priority. When so many other things are beginning to come between you and the Lord.
So if we will maintain a personal communion with the Lord, it must become our priority. I have no doubt in marriage, there are different phases of life. I recall that as a young married person, many years back, I had a, what do I call it? A pattern in the times of my own personal, apart from personal communion in the morning.
In the evening, when I return from work, the first thing I want to do is to get to my room and spend some time with the Lord. As a single person, it was wonderful. As a married person, particularly, I remember when we had our first child, the first challenge I remember was that the moment I come in, particularly when the child has now begun to walk and wants his daddy.
When I have gone in, she must come, daddy, daddy, daddy. I recall many times my wife will come and pull the child out and say, no, daddy is busy. The child doesn't understand daddy is busy.
Daddy has gone all day. Daddy has returned. She must have her daddy.
And the Lord has to say to me, so Lord, how do I balance this? He said, yes, she has a right as a child to her daddy. It is you that must rearrange your time. And that's going to bring me to the second thing that I see with the Lord Jesus Christ.
Because personal communion with God was a priority. We don't have space or time, but I know that if you check through the scriptures, you will see that despite the demand of ministry. Despite the demand of fellowship, even with disciples, the Lord Jesus organized his life, his way in such a way that that communion was not compromised.
And one wisdom God gave me then was rather than go back home quickly to say that's when I will pray. I rather when everything is done in the office, shut the door, still spend some time with the Lord. And then you can go back home and relax.
The child can have the priority of your communion because it is in his light that we continually see light. So the first thing, we must maintain our personal order. As a husband, it must be priority.
As a wife, it must be your priority. If you know that there's no way you can be effective, there's no way that your marriage can take its purpose except you are touching base continually with God. It must be our priority.
But I want to end this session this morning with something the Lord made in my heart that I just want us to share with and then we'll be praying in the matter of maintaining our personal communion, our personal order. Please turn with me to Proverbs 8. Proverbs 8. I will just raise issues then I will be stopping for us to pray together this morning. Proverbs 8. And we will read verse 34, verse 35, and verse 36.
It says, Blessed are who listen to me, watching daily at my doors, waiting at my doorway for those who find me, find life and receive favor from the Lord. But those who fail to find me, harm themselves. All who hate me, they love death.
What is the matter I want us to pray about this morning as we conclude this? As I've noted with us, for our marriage to be fulfilling, we must make the matter of our individual communion with the Lord a primary thing. If, as we pray together as couples, if it would be enriching, it must be that there's a husband who is in touch with heaven. There's a wife who is in communion at her own level, as it were, with the Lord.
But looking at how do we maintain our personal communion with the Lord? And I said the first thing I see from God's Word, which I'm trusting the Holy Spirit will expand to us much more individually, is that all who get in tune with the Lord, they may be a priority. Our personal fellowships aid, verse 34, and who listens to me? The Holy Spirit says it again, there's a blessedness. There's a blessedness in being a husband who hears God.
Being a wife who is in communion continually with God. But how is this done? The scripture says, watching daily at my gates. Watching daily at my gates.
Waiting at the post of my doors. The emphasis I sense God wants me to bring is the matter of watching daily. Watching daily.
Several things we want to come in between our fellowship, as it were, in the Lord. But for us to maintain our fellowship with God, it must be a daily thing. It must be a daily thing.
The moment you begin to miss your personal fellowship with God, you know there's danger. The moment, whether work, whether even ministry, becomes the issue that clouds you out from communion with the Lord, you are beginning to enter a danger zone. And one of the deceptions, particularly for those of us in ministry, is to think, because you have preached to others, you have received revelation and spoken, it means you are also alright.
That's deception. God needs to get us to the place where continually he has access to our inner man. And for this to be, it must become a daily thing.
As I'm concluding, as I see my time is gone, I want to ask you, dear brother, how is your fellowship with God? How is your personal communion with God? As God has brought us to this retreat, can we call on God together to revisit your altar? You cannot be the correct blessing to your wife and to your children unless you are a man who God has access to all the time. And the way to build it, it must be a priority. It must be something you are engaging on a daily basis, watching daily at my gates, waiting.
So it is not just being there daily. There must be a waiting. And that's why I was saying that we're taking this beyond just that you have your quiet time.
Because it's possible for your quiet time to become a routine. But when you are a man waiting to hear God, because God says, those who listen to me are those who are blessed. How wonderful.
How wonderful. The Lord says, those who find me, find life. It means to find him, we must seek him.
We must seek him and to obtain favor from the Lord. What is the last point I should raise? Those who sin against me wrong their own soul. And all those who hate me, they love death.
One version says, when you break communion with God, you are flirting with death. Oh, I pray the Lord will help us to see the gravity. The importance of me keeping in tune with heaven.
So much that any time you find that things are beginning to go low, you must learn the wisdom of Jesus in Luke chapter 5 verse 16. The scripture says, he often withdraws to lonely places and he prays. As I see my time is gone for now, I would like us to pray together this morning.
Honestly speaking, dear brothers and sisters, all the issues God will be bringing, it will become deeper with us when we have men who take their communion with God as a priority. When we have wives who are not just being carried along as a wheelbarrow in their marital relationship, but they are in tune with heaven. Let it not be said, you say, I don't know anything, I don't know what to say.
No, we must cultivate it. I would like us to bow our heads as we pray together at this time. This very, very first devotional challenge we're having this morning.
Can I ask you, how is your altar? As the husband, how is your personal altar with the Lord? As a wife, how is your personal communion with the Lord? Are you such a husband that hears the Lord, that the Bible says like Abraham, what God said. That issues are resolved, direction is given, because you are maintaining your communion with the Lord. Are you the wife that the Holy Spirit will speak of like Sarah and say Sarah herself.
Whose priority is not just the adornment of the physical, but you are eager about your inner life. You will help your husband far when you are such a woman. Can we pray together this morning as couples? Can we again examine before the Lord, how is my altar? Brother, is the fire on your altar, is it going low? That's danger.
The Bible says, those who ignore me, they are only courting death. They are flirting with death. Those who find me, they find life.
Can we pray this morning, the Lord, fresh grace to be a man who watches daily at your gates. Who waits at the post of your door. Please bow your heads as we pray.
Bow your heads as we pray. Let's speak to God. Let's speak to God.
I will be calling on our sister to please take us up in prayer as we conclude this session. You may need to join your hands with your spouse. And please let's pray together.
Your husband needs to be a man in tune with God. Never be content as a wife that maybe is getting things for you, but his relationship with God is down. It will be spelling doom and danger to you.
Can we pray this morning? Can we pray? Marriage cannot be sustained without the life of God. Sister Inka, please help us to pray further. Thank you.
In this morning, we are grateful unto you. Thank you, Lord, for the way you have come for us again this morning. Thank you, Lord, for the way you have spoken to us.
Father, our prayer. Oh, Lord, as we lift up our hearts unto you this morning, that's for every man and for every husband. Lord, we beg you that there will be a cultivation and a maintenance.
Oh, Lord, of a continuous current walk and relationship with you in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Father, we beg you, oh God, particularly for the wives. We are the ones that normally get busy with other things.
We are the ones that normally shoots our eyes away. There are several other things that take our time and our attention. Father, we plead with you this morning.
Please show us your mercy in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Father, we pray for everyone. Oh, Lord, as we had you this morning, everyone whose altar, the fire on our altars have gone down.
We beg you, oh Lord, let fire from on high. Let the fires upon our altar be rekindled as we go back to sit at your feet like Mary did in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. For every man, for every woman, for every husband and wife, please help us.
Oh, Lord, in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Thank you, our father in Jesus mighty name. Amen.
