Sitting at the table with King Jesus represents the sweetest friendship and fellowship with Him, where His presence awakens and actuates our graces.
Thomas Brooks emphasizes the profound impact of being in the presence of King Jesus, illustrating that His companionship enhances our spiritual graces, likened to a perfume that spreads its fragrance. He explains that when we sit at the table with Christ, we experience deep friendship and fellowship, which invigorates our faith and other virtues. Just as sunlight causes flowers to bloom, the presence of Christ brings our graces to life, allowing them to flourish and be fully realized.
Text
"While the King was at His table, my perfume
spread its fragrance." Song of Songs 1:12
That is, let Jesus Christ be but present with us, and
then our graces, which are compared to perfume, will
send forth its fragrance. Sitting at the table with
King Jesus intimates the sweetest friendship and
fellowship with Him.
"My perfume spread its fragrance," that is, my faith
is actuated, and all my other graces are exercised
and increased. Christ's presence puts life into all
our graces.
If the sun shines upon the flower--how soon does the
flower open. Just so, when the Sun of righteousness
does but shine upon a Christian's graces--how do
they open and act!
