noun, f. | -ῆς | γράφω

33.10 · Communication · Word, Passage

passage, part of a document, part of Scripture a particular portion or unit of discourse In rendering τόπος[b], περιοχή, or γραφή[a], it is often possible to use a rather general term such as the place or the part. In other instances one may wish to use a term meaning the words. Accordingly, LUK 4:21 may be rendered as ‘these words have come true today as you have heard them being read.’

the Scriptures, the holy writings (pl; ῶν f) the sacred writings of the OT Some translators have mistakenly attempted to use the rendering ‘Bible’ when translating αἱ γραφαί ‘the Scriptures’ in the NT. The reference is to the OT and not to the entire Bible, including both New and Old Testaments. It is also a mistake to translate αἱ γραφαί as ‘God’s writings,’ for this would give the impression that God himself wrote the words.

1 γραφή[a] in 33.10 differs significantly in meaning from γραφή[b] (33.53) in that the latter denotes specifically some OT Scripture passage, while γραφή[a] is a more generic reference to any unit of discourse, though in LUK 4:21 it happens to refer to an OT section. 2 For γραφή in the more generic sense, see 33.10 and footnote.
