δάμαλις, δαμαλισεως, ἡ (feminine of ὁ δαμάλης a young bullock or steer), a young cow, heifer (Aeschylus, Dionysius Halicarnassus, Lucian, others); used in Num_19:2; Num_19:6; Num_19:9 f for τΘΜψΘδ and in Heb_9:13 of the red heifer with whose ashes, by the Mosaic law, those were to be sprinkled who had become defiled. (Besides in the Sept. chiefly for ςΖβΐμΘδ.)

δάμαλις is found ter in a Coan inscription Syll 617. See also the Mysteries inscription from Andania, Syll 653 .34 (B.C. 91) Μεγάλοις θεοῖς δάμαλιν σῦν , so .69 . A diminutive is found in P Flor II. 150 .2 (A.D. 267) τὰ βούδια ὅσα ἔχεις . . . ἤτε δαμάλια ἤτε μείζονα . Δάμαλις is found as a proper name for Athenian women : see Pape Wφrt. d. gr. Eigennamen s.v. , Renan Saint Paul , p. 209 n .3 .
