διαβάλλω: 1 aorist passive διεβλήθην: 1. properly, to throw over or across, to send over, (τί διά τίνος). 2. very often, from Herodotus down, to traduce, calumniate, slander, accuse, defame (cf. Latinperstringere, German durchziehen, διά as it were from one to another; see Winer, De verb. comp. etc. Part v., p. 17)), not only of those who bring a false charge against one (διεβλητο πρός αὐτόν ἀδίκως, Josephus, Antiquities 7, 11, 3), but also of those who disseminate the truth concerning a man, but do so maliciously, insidiously, with hostility (cf. Lucian's Essay de calumn. non temere credend.) (Dan_3:8, the Sept.; Dan_6:24 Theod.); so διεβλήθη αὐτῷ ὡς διασκορπίζων, Luk_16:1 (with the dative of person to whom the charge is made, also in Herodotus 5, 35, et al.; τινα πρός τινα, Herodotus 5, 96, et al.; followed by ὡς with participle, Xenophon, Hell. 2, 3, 23; Plato, epistles 7, p. 334 a.). B.C. 119 or 114) ἀπέφαινεν ἠδικῆσθαι ὑπὸ σοῦ καὶ Δημητρίωι ἠναγκάσθαι διαβαλεῖν , had been compelled to complain to D. , shows that malice need not be assumed in Luk_16:1 any more than falsehood. For the stronger meaning see P Oxy VI. 1158 .22 (iii/A.D.) ἐὰν οὖν μάθῃς ὅτι μέλλει ζειαβαλεῖν ( l. διαβαλεῖν ) σε Ἀρητίων περὶ τῶν χαλκείνων , if you learn that A. is going to accuse you about the copper (Ed.) : cf. ib. VI. 900 .13 (A.D. 322) ἀλλ᾽ ἐπιδὴ μανθάνω τούτους βουλομένους ἐνεδρεύειν . . . τισὶ μ̣ὲν ἀ̣π̣ι̣[ο ]υ̣̑σι , ἐνίους δὲ διαβάλλοντας , but whereas I learn that these persons are desirous of acting fraudulently, some by absenting themselves, and others by deception (Edd.). Other examples are P Par 63 xi. 70 (B.C. 165) ὡς διαβάλλεται , the Jewish apologia in answer to an Imperial rescript, ib 68 .36 ἅ σοι ἀ [νη ]λέως δια [βεβλη ] μένοι προτοῦ , and BGU IV. 1040 .22 (ii/A.D.) καθαρ [ὰ ]ν γὰρ ἔχων τὴν ψ̣υ̣χ̣ὴν οὐδενὸς ἐπισ̣τ̣[. . . .]ν̣ τῶν διαβαλόντων . In ib. 1105 .14 (B.C. 11) Tryphaena pleading for a divorce calls her husband ὁ ] διαβαλλόμενος , wohl nur ein ungeschickter Ausdruck fόr der genannte (Ed.) = the complained-of person.
