διαβαίνω. P Eleph 297 ἐὰν δὲ μὴ εὐκαιρῇς τίο]ῦ SiaBAvat—the river Nile. The verb is construed with εἰς, as Ac τόϑ, in P Lille I. 6% (iii/B.c.) διαβάντος pov ἐκ TeBérvov εἰς Kopφότουν ἐπισκέψασθαι τὴν ἀδελφήϊν, P Fay rrol (A.p. 94) διάβα cis Διον[υ]σιά[δα] καὶ γνῶθι κτὰλ., “go over to Dionysias and find out.” The special force of δια- seems diluted in some occurrences. Thus cf. the noun in P Tor I, 1viii.20 (5.6. 116) (= Chrest. II. p. 38) ἐν tats kar’ ἐνιαυτὸν γινομέναις τοῦ ᾿Αμμῶνος διαβάσεσιν eis τὰ Mepvoveta, of a solemn procession: there δια- only acts as perfective, implying that a goal is reached, without dwelling on the nature of the intervening country. In P Leid W “ii. 20 (ii/iiiA.D.) a spell is given ἐὰν θέλῃς ἐπάνω KopKoδείλου διαβαίνειν, where the editor renders ‘‘sin velis supra crocodilum incedere” : that the desire is to ‘‘ cross” the Nile on top of a crocodile (as distinguished from inside). In P Par 4213 (B.c. 156) περὶ ἰδίου πράγματος διαβαίνων, we find a more general sense ‘occupying himself with his own affair”: cf BGU III. 816° (iii/A.p.) ἄξιός ἐστιν πολλῶν, kal ἂν διαβῇ τὰ ἐκεῖ πολλά. The verb is apparently ‘‘decide,” ‘‘adjudicate” in Sy/? 2167 (B.C. 262) ὃς ἀφικόμ[ενος τ]ῶν δικῶν τὰς μὲν διέλυσεν τὰς δὲ διέβαινεν : so /G NII. 5.
