seventy times seventy multiples of a quantity One should not, however, interpret ἑβδομηκοντάκις ἑπτά as referring to a specific number, such as 490, but simply an unusually large number with symbolic significance of being totally adequate or complete. 1 MAT 18:22 It is also possible that ἑβδομηκοντάκις ἑπτά in MAT 18:22 is a shortened form for ἑβδομηκοντάκις ἑπτάκις, which would mean ‘seventy times seven times,’ but this is, of course, essentially equivalent to ἑβδομηκοντάκις ἑπτά.

ἑβδομηκοντάκις. If LXX Gen 4715 to be taken as determining the meaning of the phrase & ἑπτά in Mt 1833 (see Pro/eg. p. 98 and cf. Moulton G7. ii. § 72 D), the omission of the connecting “Cand” in the LXX as compared with the Heb. DIY ΠΣ still leaves it uncertain whether we are to understand 70 - 7 or 70X 7: see McNeile ad Mt Δ c. The phrase is found with the latter meaning in Zes¢. «zt. patr. Benj. vil. 4.
