a. to seek out, search for: properly, τινα, 1Ma_9:26; figuratively: τόν κύριον, τόν Θεόν, to seek the favor of God, worship him, Act_15:17; Rom_3:11 (Tr marginal reading WH marginal reading ζητῶν); Heb_11:6 (Psa_13:2 (); Psa_33:5; (Psa_34:5); Psa_68:33 (); Amo_5:4, etc.).
b. to seek out i. e. investigate, scrutinize: τί, Sir_39:1; Sir_39:3; περί τίνος, to examine into anything, 1Pe_1:10, where it is joined with ἐξερευναν (to seek out and search out), as in 1Ma_9:26.
c. to seek out for oneself, beg, crave: Heb_12:17.
d. to demand back, require: τό αἷμα τῶν προφητῶν ἀπό τῆς γενεάς ταύτης, to take vengeance on this generation for the slaughter of the prophets (after the Hebrew, cf. 2Sa_4:11; Eze_3:18; see ἐκ, I. 7): Luk_11:50 (51). (In secular authors thus far only a single passage has been noted in which this word appears, Aristid. or. 8, i., p. 488 (i. e. orat. 38, i., p. 726, Dindorf edition).)

To the single instance of this verb from profane sources (Aristid. I. 488) cited by Thayer and LS, we can now add BGU IV. 1141 .41 (B.C. 14) περὶ δὲ τῆς σκιᾶς φανερόν μοι ἐγενήθη ἐκζητήσαντι ἠλλάχθαι μὲν τὴν πορφυρᾶν ῢ̣π̣ο̣, τοῦ Διοδώρου καὶ μὴ δεδωκέναι σοί , P Oxy XII. 1465 .11 (i/B.C.) ἀξιῶ συντ [ά ]ξ̣α̣ι̣ ἐ̣[κ ] η̣τ̣ήσαντα̣ς̤ τ̣ο̣υ̣ς̣ α̣[ἰτίο ]ὐ̣ , I request you to give orders (to your subordinates) to search out the guilty persons (Edd.), and the inscr. from Hierapolis Cagnat IV. 834 .5 δώσει . . τῷ ἐκζητήσαντι δηνάρια δισχίλια .
