the good news, the gospel (derivative of εὐαγγελίζω ‘to tell the good news,’ 33.215) the content of good news (in the NT a reference to the gospel about Jesus) In a number of languages the expression ‘the gospel’ or ‘the good news’ must be rendered by a phrase, for example, ‘news that makes one happy’ or ‘information that causes one joy’ or ‘words that bring smiles’ or ‘a message that causes the heart to be sweet.’

As the Messianic rank of Jesus was proved by his words, his deeds, and his death, the narrative of the sayings, deeds, and death of Jesus Christ came to be called εὐαγγέλιον : so perhaps in Mk. i. 1; for the passage may also mean, ‘glad tidings concerning Jesus Christ began to be prociaimed even as it is written,’ viz. by John the Baptist; cf. De Wette ad loe. At length the name was given to a written narrative of the glad tidings; so in the titles of the Gospels, on which see κατά, II. 8 ο. α. [On the eccl. senses of the word, see Soph. Lex. 5. v.]

εὐαγγέλιον. For the very rare use of this word in the singular outside the NT and early Christian literature, see the iii/A.D. pap. letter cited s.v. γνώστης ad iit., and cf. Archiv v. p. 406f. The plur. is found = ‘‘ good tidings” in the striking calendar inscr. from Priene of date about B.C. 9 with reference to the birthday of the Emperor Augustus—jptev δὲ τῶι κόσpo τῶν δι᾿ αὐτὸν εὐανγελίζων ἡ γενέθλιος, ‘* but the birthday of the god was for the world the beginning of tidings of joy on his account” (OG/S 458%, Deissmann LAZ, p. 370f.) For the more ordinary usage = ‘‘sacrifices,” “thank-offerings,’’ cf. OG/ZS 4%* (iv/B.c.) εὐαγγέλια Kal σωτήρια ἔ[θ]υσε, Michel 13257 εὐαγγέλια θύσω, and the new literary instance in Menandrea p. 90*'*. On the history of the word and its cognates, see Harnack Constitution and Law, p. 278f., and Milligan Zhess. p. 141 ff. MGr Bayγέλιο, ‘ gospel.” Evdyyedos is found in the magical P Hawara 312 (possibly ii/A.D.) (= Archiv v. p. 393) which begins— Εἰξορκείζ[ὦ] σε Evayyede κατὰ τοῦ ᾿Ανούβι --δο:-ς xrd., where Wiinsch (Ρ. 397) notes that “" HidyyeAos muss ein iibermenschliches, aber dem Anubis untergeordnetes Wesen sein.” For the word as a proper name see also BGU II. 583!
