Moulton & Milligan — Vocabulary of the Greek NT

Ἠλεί [page 279] With this Aramaic form of the Heb. ἐλωί as read by DE al. in Mat_27:46 , cf. the opening words of the imprecatory tablet Wόnsch AF 2 .1 (ii/iii A.D.) Ἰάω Ἦλ Μιχαὴλ Νέφθω . The editor quotes from the Etym. Magnum , p. 477, 4 τὸ ἢλ ὃ σημαίνει τὸν θεόν , and refers to a passage from Philo Byblius ( Fragm. Historic. Graec. iii. p. 570 fr. 4) in which Κρόνος and Ἦλ are identified Κρόνος τοίνυν ὃν οἱ Φοίνικες Ἦλ προσαγορεύουσιν . The description of God as ΰΕμ = δύναμις is supported by a striking variation of the cry of Mt l.c. in Ev. Petr. 5 Ἡ δύναμίς μου , ἡ δύναμις , κατέλειψάς με .
