Intr. § 408; current edd. are not uniform]), -ov [B. 17 (16), 8; but once (viz. Lk. i. 17 T Tr mrg. WH) -a], 6, (7998 or 37798 i.e. either ‘strength of Jehovah’ or ‘my God is Jehovah’), Elijah, a prophet born at Thisbe [but see B. D. s. v., alsos. v. Tishbite], the unflinching champion of the theocracy in the reigns of the idolatrous kings Ahab and Ahaziah. He was taken up to heaven without dying, whence the Jews expected he would return just before the advent of the Messiah, whom he would prepare the minds of the Israelites to receive (1 K. xvii—xix.; 2 K. ii. 6 sqq.; 2 Chr. xxi. 12; Mal. iv. 4 (iii. 22); Sir. xlviii. 1, 4, 12 [ef.
